Position Summary

The laboratory of Dr. Marta Markiewicz-Potoczny in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics in the College of Medicine at University of Illinois Chicago, is seeking a motivated Research Assistant Professor (RAP) to work on understanding the mechanisms of telomere protection in pluripotent stem cells and cancer cells. In a newly opened lab, this is a project that will focus on unravelling the telomere dynamics in cells with specific transcriptional activities. The RAP will work on this and other mechanisms of telomere protection, involving, but not limited to, the role of the DNA damage responses in the process and activations of specific repair pathways. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators to design, develop, execute research projects.

  • Conduct independent research experiments, including data collection and analysis.

  • Test, optimize, and troubleshoot new and existing methods, techniques, in vivo models.

  • Establish novel techniques of using the live cell imaging of telomeres in pluripotent and cancer cells.

  • Prepare scientific results and write manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Communicate results at internal lab/project meetings and external scientific conferences.

  • Assist in training graduate students and other research staff.

  • Supervise lab personnel and maintain lab environment for safety and efficiency.

  • Perform special projects as needed.

  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • PhD degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics or a related field.
    • At least 2-3 first authored, peer-reviewed, publications.
    • Strong knowledge of experimental design, data collection, data analysis and statistics.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Strong background in live-cell imaging and microscopy, molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry.
    • Experience in microscopy and live cell imaging, in vitro cell-based models and background in telomeres is a plus.
