In the role of Civic Principal, you will help shape the strategic direction of HDR's Civic sector across the Texas region, contributing to the growth and impact of our practice. You'll be part of a dynamic team focused on designing spaces that foster inclusion, equity, and community legacy. We're looking for a leader with the drive, expertise, and interpersonal skills to build a strong client base and enhance the reputation of our Civic team throughout Texas and the broader Central U.S. region.

As Civic Principal, you'll be responsible for delivering exceptional work, expanding professional networks, mentoring emerging talent, and continuing to grow your craft. This role blends business development, pursuit leadership, and project oversight-requiring a deep commitment to cultivating long-term client relationships from early engagement through project delivery.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and strategic vision for the Civic sector in Texas and the surrounding region.

  • Develop capture plans and initiate relationships with key clients.

  • Maintain a visible and active presence in the Civic market, aligned with annual fee goals.

  • Lead the development of qualifications, proposals, and pursuit strategies-including go/no-go decisions and interview preparation.

  • Negotiate project contracts and serve as Principal-in-Charge when appropriate.

  • Collaborate with local leadership to ensure project delivery meets client expectations for quality, budget, and schedule.

  • Mentor staff and support career development within Civic practice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Architecture

  • Proven business development experience in the Civic sector

  • Interest or experience in sustainable design and LEED certification

  • Current architectural registration in the candidate's state of residence

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture
  • 15 years related experience
  • A minimum 7 years project management experience
  • Registered Architect
  • Must have experience on large-scale projects
  • Must be able to lead a team on projects and make client presentations
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project)
  • Extensive knowledge and experience within the local and regional market
  • Strong team leadership, mentoring, motivational/organizational and people skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be willing to travel
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
