STS Technical Services is hiring an Aviation Safety & Certification Policy Engineer in McLean, Virginia. This role is designed for experienced aviation professionals who understand the intersection of aircraft design, certification, and operations - and want to help shape the policies that define the future of aviation safety.


Position Overview

The Aviation Safety & Certification Policy Engineer supports the development and oversight of aviation safety and certification standards. This position emphasizes policy, regulatory analysis, and advocacy rather than hands-on engineering. You'll ensure that aircraft certification, maintenance, and operational practices align with FAA and Transport Canada requirements while representing pilot and operator perspectives across industry and government platforms.


Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze aircraft design, certification, and maintenance regulations to develop policy recommendations
  • Support safety investigations and advise on continuing airworthiness matters
  • Collaborate with FAA, Transport Canada, and industry representatives to advance safety initiatives
  • Monitor Airworthiness Directives, Service Bulletins, and emerging regulatory issues
  • Translate complex technical data into concise reports, position papers, and leadership briefings
  • Prepare official communications and advocacy materials for internal and external stakeholders

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Aeronautical, or a related engineering field
  • 3-5+ years of experience in civil aviation, with expertise in Part 25 design/certification or Part 121 operations
  • Strong understanding of FAA and Transport Canada regulations (FARs/CARs)
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • A&P license or equivalent maintenance/manufacturing experience preferred
  • Pilot's license with instrument rating preferred
  • Familiarity with NTSB/TSB accident investigation processes desirable
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment

Physical Requirements

  • Primarily office-based; occasional lifting up to 30 lbs
  • Domestic and international travel up to 25%
