Job Summary
The Chief Engineer / Stationary Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in state office buildings located in the San Francisco Bay Area. This position ensures optimal performance of HVAC, boiler, chiller, and life-safety systems while maintaining safety, reliability, and energy efficiency. The Chief Engineer oversees engineering staff and coordinates maintenance activities, while the Stationary Engineer focuses on daily system operations and preventive maintenance. Job Responsibilities Chief Engineer
Supervise Stationary Engineers and maintenance personnel
Oversee daily operations of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
Schedule, perform, and document preventive maintenance activities
Coordinate vendor services and ensure compliance with state safety standards and regulations
Maintain logs, records, and performance reports for building systems
Support energy efficiency and system optimization initiatives
Stationary Engineer
Operate and maintain boilers, chillers, pumps, air handlers, and cooling towers
Conduct system inspections, rounds, and diagnostics
Troubleshoot HVAC, electrical, and plumbing issues
Complete work orders through computerized maintenance management or building management systems
Assist the Chief Engineer with facility improvement projects and operational support
Job Requirements
Minimum of 3 years of experience in commercial, hospital, or government facilities maintenance
Strong technical knowledge of HVAC, boiler, chiller, and building automation systems
EPA Universal Certification (required)
City of San Francisco or Local 39 Stationary Engineer License (highly preferred)
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and O&M manuals
Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills
Valid California Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in state or county facilities such as DGS or Caltrans buildings
Familiarity with building automation systems (e.g., Johnson Controls, Siemens, Tridium)
Leadership experience in a Chief Engineer or supervisory capacity
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required
Technical or vocational training in HVAC, mechanical, or electrical systems preferred
Work Experience
Minimum of 3 years in a stationary engineer, maintenance, or facilities operations role
Supervisory experience preferred for Chief Engineer candidates
