Teacher Liaison

Summary

Provides support for the educational needs of pediatric patients at Joan Secchia Children's Rehabilitation Hospital. This support includes, but is not limited to, collaborative educational planning with school systems during periods of hospitalization and to meet post-discharge needs, assisting with individualized educational plans, and implementation of the hospital-based school program.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Educational Support

  • Identifies, in collaboration with care team and patient's family, pediatric patients in need of educational support due to acute or chronic illness or condition. Acts as a patient/family advocate.

  • Obtains consent from family and contacts patient's local school for child's current schoolwork and assists in the flow of assignments between the hospital and school. Plans and conducts daily lessons to support patient's school goals and assignments. Evaluates and reports student progress to parents and school. Recommends and evaluates the need for formal testing of students if needed. Contacts local school district for continued homebound teaching services if needed.

  • Helps local schoolteacher to understand any new educational needs the child may have to ensure the successful return of the student to the classroom.

  • Assists families in understanding their child's educational rights as they relate to state and federal regulations or guidelines.

  • Establishes a volunteer program in conjunction with volunteer services to provide tutors to children and teens to assist in meeting the educational needs of children/teens served by the school program.

Patient Care

  • Provides patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration and as required by Federal and State laws and regulations.

  • Plans, coordinates, and facilitates a variety of age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate educational opportunities during treatment (morning, afternoon, evening, weekends), ranging from passive to active engagement.

  • Assists families in providing resources or connections to programs that may reduce future educational concerns due to medical issues.

  • Ensures patient safety during both structured and unstructured educational sessions.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Communicates regularly with the interdisciplinary team regarding patient goals, progress, and relevant concerns.

  • Attends staff meetings, in-service trainings, and interdisciplinary team conferences as required.

  • Collaborates with the Child Life Specialist to provide programming for pediatric patients and families which addressed the psychosocial and developmental needs of children and teens coping with illness and injury.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Document patient engagement, behavior, developmental progress, and social interaction in accordance with hospital standards.

  • Complete initial assessments, team conference notes, and discharge summaries within established timelines.

Facility & Resource Management

  • Maintain teacher educational and other supplies, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and readiness.

  • Assist in the daily upkeep and organization of the classroom.

  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Customer Service Responsibilities

Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages, coaches, and monitors the same in team members. This individual should consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers and deal discretely and sensitively with confidential information.

Responsibilities in Quality Improvement

Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions. Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.

Essential Job Qualifications

  • Required bachelor's degree in education, special education or related field.

  • At least 2 years of relevant experience teaching and/or related experience.

  • Valid Teaching Certificate for the State of MI with registration with the Michigan Department of Education.

  • Proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Word.

  • Outstandingorganizational skills and customer service skills are required.

  • Ability to perform in a high-paced environment with a positive attitude.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Possesses a Special Education Teaching Certification is a plus.

  • Preferred special education teaching, behavioral and mental health experience.
