Position Description

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) and the Center for Humanities and the History of Modern Biology invites applications for a Historian of Life Sciences position to advance research and archival initiatives exploring the history of modern biology -particularly molecular biology, genetics, cancer genetics, neuroscience, and biotechnology. The historian will play a central role in developing and interpreting CSHL's Nobel Laureate Collection and related archival holdings documenting major discoveries in biomedical research. This is a three-year, on-site position with the possibility of extension, based at Cold Spring Harbor, New York.

The CSHL Archives is a major repository of primary material on the history of the life sciences in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and a large repository of oral-history interviews, and documents from nearly a century's worth of international symposia on the life sciences.

The Center for Humanities and History of Modern Biology was created to establish a permanent home for the humanities at CSHL. The Center promotes humanistic understandings of modern biology and offers a variety of educational programs.

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a unique institution known internationally both for its research and for its meetings and courses. These cover a wide range to topics in the life and biomedical sciences and are attended by over 9500 participants annually. The historian will be encouraged to take advantage of this vibrant intellectual community.


Position Responsibilities

  • Conduct original historical research on modern experimental biology, including molecular biology, neuroscience, cancer genetics, and biotechnology.
  • Lead the growth, organization, and interpretation of the Nobel Laureate Collection and associated archives.
  • Conduct oral history interviews with leading and emerging scientists.
  • Present public lectures and develop a seminar series on the history of science for graduate trainees at the CSHL School of Biological Sciences.
  • Lead the Center for Humanities and History of Modern Biology educational programs
  • Write grant proposals and participate in development activities to support research and collection growth.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in History of Science, Life Sciences, or History of Medicine
  • Demonstrated research experience in the history of modern life sciences.
  • At least three years of research experience in a museum, archive, or academic setting
  • Teaching experience and strong communication skills
  • Background in oral history preferred

The salary range listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.
