One Robert Wood Johnson Place, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 Job Title: Phlebotomist Location: Main Hospital - New Brunswick Department Name: Lab-Specimen Collect & Proc Req #: 0000220541 Status: Hourly Shift: Day Pay Range: $19.18 - $22.92 per hour Pay Transparency: The above reflects the anticipated hourly wage range for this position if hired to work in New Jersey. The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience. Qualifications Must possess a high school diploma and phlebotomy certification or be a registered Medical Assistant Must have a minimum of 1 year phlebotomy experience Must demonstrate a knowledge of laboratory testing and specimen collection Must be able to work day shift Must be customer service oriented Must be able to sit stand and walk for a minimum of 60 minutes Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs Essential Duties Patient Identification Properly identifies the patient utilizing two points of reference full name and Medical Record number or Date of Birth Consistently matches information on the patient identification band with information on the paperwork and specimen labels Engages in active patient identification Understands that patient identification is the MOST important aspect of blood collection Specimen Labeling Consistently labels using the 5 required pieces of information needed on the Specimen Labels specimens in the presence of the patient Avoids incidents of mislabeling as a result of good clinical and procedural practices Specimen Collection Uses appropriate collection devices for each patient Consistently utilizes the correct Order of Draw Demonstrates sound understanding of which tubes are required for testing Demonstrates good collection techniques that result in decreased incidents of hemolysis and clotting Demonstrates sound understanding of specimen integrity issues Demonstrates prompt response to collection requests Demonstrates effective capillary collection techniques Issues correct fluid and urine containers with proper labels Infection Control Demonstrates effective handwashing technique Uses and disposes of gloves as per procedure Uses and disposes of sharps as per procedure Demonstrates understanding and working knowledge of Standard Precautions Computer Entry Enters test request into the LIS selecting the correct patient the correct patient account number the correct patient physician and the correct tests Generates LIS labels for those test requests places the correct label on the correct specimen delivers the specimens to the testing areas in a timely manner Work Schedule Is required to rotate through Inpatient Outpatient Adult Pediatric Clinic and sites as scheduled Is required to work weekends as part of the standard phlebotomy rotation schedule Team Work Acts as a Team Player by demonstrating cooperation and flexibility on the job as evidenced by the following indicators Utilizes lulls in workload to assist fellow workers in their duties regardless of station assignment Helps provide break and meal coverage regardless of station assignment to ensure timely completion of STATS Adheres to policies on break and meal times Adheres to policies on attendance and reports to work on time to insure the change of shift runs smoothly and patient testing is not delayed Works other than scheduled hours to help provide adequate staffing when needed Accepts and performs other duties as assigned with enthusiasm complete them in the allotted time frame Safety Utilizes proper techniques and abides by safety regulations according to the following indicators Closely adheres to Standard Precautions Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan Hazcom protocols and the OSHA BloodBorne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan Biohazard waste and non biohazard waste is disposed of correctly Personal Protective Equipment are worn appropriately as indicated Environmental controls are used correctly as indicated Annual safety testing documentation is completed Interpersonal Skills Communication cooperation and assistance are given promptly in a clear courteous manner to coworkers hospital staff patients physicians according to the following criteria Demonstrates a hospitable congenial and helpful attitude Utilizes good interpersonal relation skill which include maintaining good working relations with fellow employees and maintains good rapport with all hospital personnel Answers the telephone in a friendly and courteous manner Accepts and performs in a timely and correct manner other duties as assigned At RWJBarnabas Health, our market-competitive Total Rewards package provides comprehensive benefits and resources to support our employees physical, emotional, social, and financial health.
