What your job will be like:

As part of the American Science Cloud initiative, the candidate will use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for the execution and analysis of experiments and act as a bridge between physics division and the broader Jefferson Lab AI community to identify needs and promote the use of AI. Recommends various AI and ML technology options or approaches for systems, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of performance, efficiency or costs.

In this role you will:



  • Interact with the Jefferson Lab physics staff, computer staff, and the user community to provide support and guidance on AI/ML software and hardware development with the goal of transforming the traditional nuclear physics workflow to make use of these disruptive new tools
  • Directly support deployment and integration of AI/ML anomaly detection software
  • Support the containerization and distributed AI/ML computing efforts across the Experimental Halls and EIC groups
  • Coordinate the ongoing and future streaming readout activities with the Experimental Halls and EIC groups
  • Actively participate in software and hardware development, both personally and in an advisory role, to support the above objectives
  • Directly support research activities for experiments in the Halls in the areas of data analysis and HPC/Farm computing interoperability
  • Help develop and oversee the offline analysis workflow for selected experiments.
  • Investigate integration of SIMD processing (CPU/GPU) into existing analysis code and getting it deployed to production

  • Ph.D. Experimental Nuclear Physics

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Demonstrated knowledge of AI/ML computational infrastructure and applications applicable to large scale experimental facilities
  • Strong proficiency in Linux/unix command-line environments required
  • Knowledge of nuclear physics detector systems, experimental physics analysis conventions and processes


Qualifications We Prefer:


  • Operational experience with software like PODD, hcana, SWIF, Hydra
  • Experience with Nuclear Physics Computing environments and software toolkits: slurm, ROOT, Rucio, XRootD, Singularity/Apptainer/Docker containers, Kubernetes, OKD, OpenShift, etc.

    • 2 or more years Postdoctoral experience in nuclear physics and/or AI/ML
