The Vice President (VP), Musculoskeletal (MSK) Services is a senior leadership position responsible for advancing the strategic, operational, and administrative excellence of Duke Health's musculoskeletal services and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. This role integrates oversight of clinical care, research, education, and operations, ensuring seamless collaboration and optimal outcomes across all domains. Operating in a highly collaborative environment, this position will work with health system and academic leaders, as well as external stakeholders, to drive innovation, enhance operational efficiency, and support market growth. It will lead the development and execution of programs that enhance patient experiences and optimize outcomes within Duke Health's MSK Service Line. This service line includes Orthopedics, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Sports Medicine, Ambulatory Clinics, inpatient care, and related services. This role will collaborate with leaders of other service lines or units to promote seamless, efficient, and effective care across the healthcare system. Duties and Responsibilities of this Level - Direct and mentor multidisciplinary teams, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture. - Recommend for appointment and renewal unit/program directors within the service line and oversee their effort and performance. - Direct and supervise staff; manage personnel activities; provide guidance and recommendations. - Maintain liaisons with all levels of administration, faculty, and outside organizations to coordinate business, accomplish directives, and facilitate the resolution of problems. - Foster partnerships between clinical, academic, and administrative teams to align initiatives with organizational goals. - Oversee integrated MSK and orthopedic programs across clinical, research, and educational domains to ensure excellence in patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and innovation. - Collaborate with senior leadership to align short- and long-term planning with organizational goals. - Drive operational efficiency through process improvement, resource optimization, and standardization of services throughout the portfolio. - Implement and promote technological advancements to enhance all aspects of the portfolio. - Oversee operations of the MSK-related clinical programs, including orthopedics, physical and occupational therapy, sports medicine, and related services to ensure high-quality, cost-effective care delivery. - Oversee the departmental academic activities, including the two professional training doctoral programs, residency and fellowship programs, and the research and innovation portfolio. - Support administrative aspects of the department. - Work in a matrixed environment with health system and academic leadership to design and implement innovative, balanced programs. - Develop and manage operating and capital budgets, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities. - Optimize financial performance through effective revenue cycle management and cost containment. - Ensure regulatory compliance and adherence to organizational policies across clinical and administrative functions. - Provide assistance as needed for the administrative and financial aspects of academic programs, including residency, fellowship, and professional doctoral training. - Provide other support to foster the translation of academic findings into clinical practice. - Champion patient-centered care and provider satisfaction to enhance service delivery and team morale. - Align physician engagement strategies with operational goals through collaboration with medical group leadership. Required Qualifications at this Level Education Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or a related field is required. Master's degree in business administration, healthcare administration, or a related field is strongly preferred. Experience Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare, with significant exposure to MSK services or academic medical centers. Proven track record in managing complex operations, including physician practice management, academic programs, research initiatives, and administrative oversight of large departments. Experience in organizations where continuous improvement is part of the culture.
