OPEN RECRUITMENT

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes, across the State of Maryland. Nature of Work: This is the supervisory level of work coordinating the skilled trade activities of the MDTA maintenance program. The employee will supervise the maintenance and repair of electrical systems/equipment and oversee related maintenance projects through subordinate trades workers and/or outside contractors. Work may be performed along with subordinate staff when required.

This is maintenance work requiring physical exertion performed either outdoors under all weather conditions or inside an MDOT building. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds and may also be required to work on equipment located at high elevations, and/or perform their job in cramped quarters in buildings or underground. Employees in these classes are considered essential employees and are subject to emergency call back procedures, twenty-four hours a day, as may be required to maintain continuous operation of a facility. Employees may be required to work rotating shift work, to include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

The incumbent will receive general supervision from the Chief Facility Maintenance Officer or other designated official. The current vacancy is in Cecil County, MD (Perryville) at the JFK Highway Maintenance 2 Utility Shop. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies at other facilities throughout the MDTA.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of experience working with high-voltage (600 volts and up) service, switch gear and control wiring or large (30 horsepower or more) motors, compressors and motor circuitry is required. Two years of this experience must have been in a commercial or industrial setting. Please note that your application must specify the high-voltage job duties performed.

Notes:

  1. Additional work experience performing skilled trades as defined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
  2. A certificate from a vocational technical school with a major in one or more of the skilled trades as defined above maybe substituted for one year of the required general experience.
  3. Candidates may substitute equivalent U.S. Armed Forces military service experience for civilian experience cited above.

Licenses & Certifications

  1. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles. Employees are required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. All applicants must list their license number and expiration date on the application.
  1. During the probationary period, employees may be required to obtain and maintain a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland, depending on the type of equipment operated.
  1. The employing administration may require employees to satisfy its agency training and certification program requirements to obtain and maintain permanent status in this classification.

Additional Information

  1. Candidates are subject to an extensive pre-employment security background check as required by the FAA Federal Aviation Regulation Part 107.
  2. Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  4. Employees in this safety-sensitive classification may be subject to periodic and/ or post-accident drug/alcohol testing in accordance with State regulations on testing for illegal use of drugs and/ or prohibited use of alcohol.
  5. Candidates may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform and supervise maintenance work on high structures and in cramped quarters.
  6. Employees may be subject to emergency recall 24 hours a day and are required to maintain a reliable communication link for emergency call back requirements.
  7. Employees in this classification are considered "Essential Employees" and shall sign and agree to all policies and procedures relating to "Essential Employees" status. Employees are responsible for transportation to and from the jobsite.
  8. Employees that work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials, such as: asbestos, lead-based paint, or chromium, may be required to undergo periodic medical testing and may be required to pass hazardous materials training and can wear a respirator.
