Director, Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute

The UCSF School of Medicine seeks an outstanding individual to lead its internationally-recognized Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute (BCHSI). The BCHSI, established in 2015, serves as an academic hub for UCSF faculty, students, trainees, and staff who utilize computational methodologies to address topics in health and wellness. BCHSI faculty aspire to lead the world in creating and applying new paradigms of computational sciences to develop next-generation insights that advance the field of precision medicine and address society's most pressing health challenges. Given the growing importance of such methods in healthcare delivery and biomedical research and UCSF's prominent placement in the Silicon Valley ecosystem, the Director of BCHSI is likely to have an outsized role in shaping the future of AI and computation.

The successful candidate will be an established leader in bioinformatics, computational biology, and/or clinical informatics with demonstrated research excellence in computational, quantitative, or bioinformatics methodology, and exceptional administrative and organizational skills. This individual will be responsible for setting the strategic direction and vision for the Institute, ensuring alignment with its mission and goals. The Director will provide comprehensive leadership, management, and stewardship of the Institute's academic missions, including advancing excellence in research, education, and training. The individual chosen will guide the overall direction of BCHSI, fostering innovation, collaboration, and impact in the fields of bioinformatics and computational biology, and will:



  • Actively foster a climate that ensures fairness, opportunity, collaboration, and professional growth
  • Promote teamwork both within an institute and between/among other UCSF Institutes and Departments in all aspects of academic and clinical functions
  • Serve as a role model for the Institute by demonstrating commitment to the School's and the University's core values and ideals
  • Uphold the University's Code of Conduct, demonstrating the highest ethical and professional standards, respect and concern for individuals and the institution, and promoting personal and professional responsibility and accountability in all activities
  • Cultivate relationships across the campus among other departments and schools, across the UC System, with technology companies and entrepreneurs, and with national and international colleagues; and
  • Work collaboratively with San Francisco and Bay Area community leaders to identify learning and research opportunities that will benefit all.


An MD and/or PhD (or equivalent degree) is required.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $150,200 - $442,800. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
