Position Detail:

We are looking for seasonal, temporary support staff for our Eagle View Observation Site in Southbury, CT.


Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Recreation and Programming, the Shepaug Eagle View Support Staff is responsible for welcoming the public to the Eagle View Observation Site and will locate and identify bald eagles migrating to the Shepaug Dam as well as other wildlife. Will engage with the public by sharing the wonders of local wildlife, particularly birds, through identification, interpretation, and interactive education. Assists in providing a secure and safe environment for migratory bald eagles and ensures all visitors follow the rules and regulations of the Eagle View site.

Pay rate: $19.00/hour

Key Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:



  • Wildlife Identification: Accurately identify and share information about local bird species and other wildlife;
  • Interpretation: Provide informative talks and demonstrations to visitors about the ecology, behaviors, and conservation efforts related to local wildlife;
  • Public Engagement: Interact with park visitors and answer questions;
  • Educational Support: Assist in the development of interpretive displays, signage, and materials to enhance public understanding of wildlife and conservation;
  • Safety and Conservation Awareness: Ensure that all public interactions promote safe, respectful, and ethical wildlife viewing practices;
  • Site Security and Rule Enforcement: Monitor the site to ensure it is secure, and that all visitors are following park rules, safety guidelines, and ethical wildlife viewing practices including ensuring visitors maintain appropriate behavior, stay within designated areas, and adhere to all regulations;
  • General Support: Assist with program setup, visitor engagement, and other tasks as needed to support wildlife education initiatives;
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned;
  • Comply with all FirstLight policies and procedures.


Job Qualifications / Skills


  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Strong ability to identify local bird species and other wildlife (training may be provided);
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to engage and educate diverse audiences;
  • Experience with or an interest in wildlife, birds, and/or environmental education;
  • Basic knowledge of site rules and safety protocols. Ability to monitor and manage visitor behavior to ensure compliance with rules and create a safe, enjoyable environment;
  • Must enjoy working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions;
  • Self-starter with a high level of initiative and independence;
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and have reliable transportation.

Physical Requirements



  • Will be exposed to a variety of weather conditions such as rain, snow and heat;
  • Ability to be physically mobile and frequently stand, walk, sit, reach, climb, bend, stoop, kneel or crouch on uneven surfaces;
  • Will be exposed to poison ivy, ticks, other biting insects and plants that may cause skin reactions;
  • Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds if hauling trash.
