What to Expect
Tesla's Vision Automation team seeks a technician to support computer vision inspection deployments. The devices (RTSP or GigE cameras) are deployed along Tesla's production lines manufacturing environments for a variety of tasks, but this role focuses on vehicle quality inspections. The ideal candidate has demonstrated an interest in computer vision systems and has proven their ability to solve difficult problems. They should also want to be on the front line of the most advanced manufacturing facilities in the world.

Daily roles and responsibilities include hands-on, lineside installation, training, validation, and deployment and maintenance of the camera systems. While system design and code will generally come from Software and Machine Learning engineers, getting the systems to work, i.e., testing them and working with engineers to fix them, is the role of the technician. This includes, for example, image collection and validation of machine learning and pattern recognition models. Technicians are expected to work with cross functional teams of stakeholders and have basic project management skills. 24-hour on-call is not part of the role, but serious and rare failure events may lead to after-hours work. Tesla provides training on all software required to perform the role - no prior experience with machine learning or software engineering needed, although a willingness to learn is crucial.

What You'll Do
  • Understand basic car quality issues and help determine if inspecting them automatically with computer vision is possible
  • Collaborate with relevant teams to determine optimal locations to install hardware
  • Install line-side equipment, bolting brackets, and basic hand tool usage including cameras and computer hardware
  • Perform wiring, networking, and operation of computer programs in an industrial/manufacturing environment; monitor alerts to identify failures and implement quick fixes
  • Conduct fault trials and validations on production lines to capture diverse image sets of vehicle components and assess model performance
  • Annotate images to create custom datasets with both nominal and failure conditions of inspected components for machine learning model training and validation
  • Support engineers as they iterate on these systems by providing direct feedback on how the systems are functioning on the line, including communicating time periods of failure of the system

What You'll Bring
  • 1 year of experience working in an industrial or technical organization preferred
  • Solid computer skills including specific experience with file systems and basic understanding of computer networks
  • Basic understanding of electrical safety
  • Solid written communication skills and willingness to document
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work in an extremely fast-paced environment
  • Must have command of English language, both written and verbal

Essential Physical Demands

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time, up to 12 hours a day
  • Ability to stand and walk for up to 12 hours a day, including over varied and uneven terrain
  • Frequently and repetitively, lift, push and carry up to 35 lbs., including the ability to carry 20 lbs. up and down stairs
  • Frequently and repetitively, bend, lift and reach to install parts
  • Stoop, lay, bend, reach, squat, kneel, crouch, twist and crawl for extended periods of time, including up to 12 hours a day
  • Climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolding or other high structures
  • Ability to find issues in a work process and receive safety signals using sight, touch, and hearing
  • Wearing Personal Protective Equipment, including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses, safety shoes, reflective vest, and adhering to prescribed safety rules and guidelines
