Job Summary

In accordance with California Business and Professions Code Section 1269 and under direct and constant supervision of a Cytotechnologist, this position supports Departmental purposes through the functions of timely and accurate specimen receipt, accessioning, preparation and/or processing for analysis on various body fluids and tissues. Functions also include answering telephones and giving specimen collection information and results, clerical work including filing and record keeping, supply inventory and ordering, glassware maintenance, reagent preparation, equipment and general area maintenance. This position supports the departmental commitment to teaching and training as stated in the UC Davis Principles of Community.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent experience or training
  • Preparing, maintaining, using cytology stains. Receiving cases, accessioning into EMR Experience with Hologic T2000/T5000 processing.
  • Cytopathology experience with an understanding of cytology interpretations, processing, staining techniques, and methodology.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology (anatomy, medical conditions, symptoms, test methods, treatment).
  • Knowledge of all safety precautions necessary in working in a laboratory environment to include work with chemicals, equipment (mechanical and electrical), biological samples, radioactive materials (where applicable), etc.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining the equipment and ability to recognize when an instrument, procedure, or piece of equipment is not functioning properly and initiate corrective action.
  • Skill in performing related computer procedures (LIS, HIS).
  • Ability to judge what information should be passed on to a different level of staff, i.e., Supervisor, Senior Cytotechnologist, and initiate appropriate and complete communication.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining files/records, such as reagent preparation, quality control, and instrument maintenance records, procedure development, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in a science related field.
  • Track inventory, receive and stock supplies as delivered.
  • Knowledge of quality control measures and regulatory requirements in the laboratory.
  • Ability to train new staff, residents, and perform special requests for faculty.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse multi-site department whose mission is to create a healthier world through bold innovation in public health, education, technology and research. Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
