Genetic Counselor II: Under supervision, perform the full range of genetic counseling duties, including assessment of patients' knowledge, understanding, and psychological status as it relates to their medical/genetic situation and counsel accordingly with respect to these issues based on sound integration of theory and practice. Assist in research for publication and/or presentation; provide public and health professional education; and/or assist in the training of genetic counseling students, medical students, residents and postdoctoral fellows.

Minimum Qualifications

- American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) eligible or Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC)
- Board Eligible or board certification In genetic counseling by the American Board of Medical Genetics
- Incumbent must be a graduate of an accredited program in genetic counseling, have a Master's Degree In applicable science.
- No Minimum Work Experience required
- Skill in interviewing and counseling techniques to elicit from the patient or family, the information necessary to reach an appropriate conclusion; anticipate area of difficulty and conflict; assist families and individuals, recognize and cope with their emotional psychological needs; recognize situations requiring psychiatric referral; transmit pertinent information effectively
- Ability to perform complex risk assessments using genetic and mathematic principles
- Knowledge of health care resources available for appropriate referral.
- Ability to appreciate medical aspects of the disease or disorder, ability to integrate clinical and genetic information in order to understand the limitations, interpretation and significance of specialized laboratory and clinical procedures.
- Knowledge of cell cycle, meiosis and mitosis; knowledge of chromosomal aberrations and associated clinical features
- knowledge of chromosomal polymorphisms; knowledge of chromosomal fragility and breakage syndromes, common Mendelian genetic disorders
- knowledge of population cytogenetics
- knowledge of human, clinical, molecular, biochemical, somatic cell, and developmental and reproductive genetics
- Knowledge of current development in the field of genetics; must be able to remain current as well.
- Skill in writing comprehensive counseling reports for patient records, referring health professionals and clients.
- Ability to deliver presentations in the field of medical genetics to professional and lay groups.

The UC Davis Health Prenatal Diagnosis of Northern California is a beacon of hope for underserved populations facing at-risk and high-risk pregnancies. Our Prenatal Diagnosis of Northern California (PNDx) center is a recognized hub for prenatal diagnostics, offering services such as prenatal ultrasounds, prenatal testing (including amniocenteses and chorionic villus sampling), and Maternal Fetal Medicine consultations.

Work Environment
UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
