Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service. The Mechanical Department coordinates and oversees the repair, inspection, cleaning, rebuilding, replacing, and maintenance of 1,180 pieces of rolling stock used in commuter service. The department's goal is to provide safe, clean, and reliable service while maintaining the fleet to the standards of the Federal Railroad Administration, Association of American Railroads, American Public Transit Association and the original equipment manufacturers. Reporting to the Director, Metra Electric District Mechanical Department, the position will supervise Mechanical Foremen and craft employees in the Paint Shop, EMU/Car Shops, depot and storage yards in the painting of Metra's rollingstock and performance of other duties as assigned. Develop, implement, and coordinate procedures and schedules surface preparation and application of paint and related products on Metra's fleet of locomotives and passenger cars. Evaluate employee's work performance, train employees in painting methods and techniques, and ensure they are provided with materials and equipment needed to complete assignments. Determine suitable paint products to use in various applications and estimate time and materials. Inspect facilities enforce maintenance, cleanliness, and safety rules. Administer provisions of collective bargaining agreement including: conducting formal disciplinary conferences and investigations, and monitoring staffing levels. Complete employee time sheets, accident reports, and work orders. Coordinate work with contractors and evaluate the final product for compliance with specifications. Review catalog and product bulletins for new equipment, tools, and supplies. Responsible for the safety objectives, goals, and program of the organization ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations. Work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization. This position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing.
