POSITION SCOPE AND ORGANIZATIONAL IMPACT

The Director of Environmental Health & Safety (BESS) will serve as a senior leader responsible for building, launching, and overseeing a new EH&S program dedicated to Battery Energy Storage Systems across Moss' national solar operations. This role will establish strategic direction, develop program frameworks, and build a high-performing team of EH&S professionals to support compliance and best-in-class safety performance on BESS projects.

This position will drive organizational change by designing scalable safety systems, partnering cross-functionally with engineering and operations leaders, and ensuring alignment with federal, state, and local regulations. In this role, you will lead with a people-first mindset-coaching, developing, and empowering your team while forging strong partnerships with operations, project management teams, and project leadership. Your work will create the organizational backbone for BESS safety at Moss and set the standard for excellence in an evolving and rapidly growing sector. The Director will shape the future of Moss' BESS EH&S capabilities and play a key leadership role in elevating safety culture and set the standard for excellence in an evolving and rapidly growing business sector.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Leadership & Development

  • Design, build, and implement a comprehensive EH&S program for BESS operations across Moss Solar

  • Develop organizational strategy for BESS safety, including standards, protocols, workflows, and performance metrics

  • Recruit, develop, and lead a new team of EH&S professionals dedicated to BESS project support

  • Establish scalable processes, training, and documentation to support multi-state operations

Safety Risk Management & Compliance

  • Develop and implement safety standards and processes specific to battery energy storage systems

  • Lead the development of training materials that empower teams to execute safely and consistently

  • Conduct and oversee hazard identification, job hazard analyses, and risk assessments for BESS installations

  • Lead safety audits, inspections, and compliance reviews for energy storage sites

  • Oversee incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action implementation

Technical & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with operations and site project management teams to proactively integrate safety into planning and execution

  • Provide expert-level guidance on regulatory and industry standards, including NFPA 855, UL 9540, NEC 706, and other BESS safety codes

  • Train and mentor field teams, engineers, and technicians on safe battery handling, emergency response, and system-specific protocols

  • Serve as the senior EH&S point of contact for BESS safety strategy and program adoption

Leadership & Strategic Influence

  • Provide direction and oversight to project-level EH&S teams supporting BESS

  • Build strong relationships with clients to champion safety culture and influence decision-making

  • Maintain current safety credentials and ensure compliance with Moss standards and regulatory requirements

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, or related field preferred

  • Strong electrical related experience

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in energy storage safety, ideally within battery storage systems; experience leading teams preferred

  • Deep knowledge of safety regulations and industry standards applicable to BESS and renewable energy systems

  • Professional safety certifications (CSP, CHST, or similar) preferred

  • Strong analytical, leadership, and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization

  • Ability to safely operate a company vehicle; valid driver's license with clean driving record

  • Proficiency with standard office software (Excel, Word, databases, etc.)

  • Willingness to travel extensively across multiple states
