Job Summary


Employment Duration: 6 months

The Academic Human Resources Analyst 3 is a seasoned professional with a comprehensive understanding of UC, campus, and departmental academic personnel practices, policies, and procedures. This individual resolves moderate to complex academic personnel and HR-related issues and serves as the primary academic contact for an assigned portfolio of client departments.

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Personnel Advising & Policy Interpretation

  • Analyze and interpret policies and guidelines to advise unit clients on onboarding, appointments, compensation, work-eligibility (visa) matters, and benefits considerations.
  • Counsel departments on appointment types, visa application processes, and policy compliance.
  • Provide timely, proactive customer service; initiate and respond to inquiries; keep clients informed of case statuses.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and specialty centers to perform academic personnel and HR duties.
  • Identify critical stakeholders involved in policy interpretation and escalate complex situations appropriately.
  • Learn unique departmental needs and synthesize multiple overlapping policies to support compliant decision-making.

Academic Onboarding, Appointments & Reviews

  • Facilitate and manage onboarding, appointment, and academic review processes for faculty, non-faculty academics, and trainees.
  • Administer academic actions in accordance with deadlines, policies, and labor contracts.
  • Provide customer service and status updates throughout the process.
  • Partner with internal teams to support academic personnel and HR needs for client departments.

Case Management & Systems

  • Manage and process cases in PeopleConnect; track and respond to client requests to meet internal deadlines.
  • Use UCSF HR information systems, including PeopleConnect, UCPath, Advance, and HBS/MyTime.
  • Produce ad hoc reports as needed.

Training & Other Duties

  • Identify and tailor training needs for diverse client groups.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • 3+ years of experience in UC or university academic personnel services, or related HR experience involving high-level HR activities; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to apply and interpret systemwide and campus academic personnel and HR policies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize competing assignments and integrate information to determine appropriate actions.
  • Minimum of 3 years of directly related experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Strong understanding of compensation policies, collective bargaining agreements, and procedures governing academic employees and health sciences compensation plans.
