Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Accessibility Remediation Specialist for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences and New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station ( NJAES). The Accessibility Remediation Specialist provides advanced technical expertise to ensure that all digital materials and platforms within the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences ( SEBS) and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station ( NJAES) comply with federal and institutional accessibility standards. This position is responsible for auditing, remediating, and validating accessibility of documents, websites, and online learning materials. The specialist applies in-depth knowledge of accessibility technologies and standards to improve digital inclusion and ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA), Section 504/508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Audits, remediates, and tests accessibility of digital content including PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, websites, and multimedia.
  • Conducts accessibility evaluations and corrections within Canvas LMS to ensure compliance with WCAG and ADA standards.
  • Utilizes accessibility testing and remediation tools (e.g., Adobe Acrobat Pro, Ally, WAVE1Deque Axe Monitor, NVDA, JAWS) to identify and resolve accessibility issues.
  • Collaborates with web developers, faculty, and staff to integrate accessibility best practices into digital content creation and website management.
  • Develops and maintains documentation, reports, and audit results to demonstrate compliance with accessibility standards.
  • Provides training, consultation, and technical support to content creators to improve accessibility awareness and implementation.
  • Stays current on emerging accessibility tools, standards, and federal compliance regulations.

Salary Details $30/hourly

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Web Development or a closely related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in digital accessibility remediation, preferably in higher education or a complex organizational environment.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of WCAG 2.1 AA, Section 508, and ADA Title II/III accessibility standards.
  • Proven experience remediating complex PDFs, Word documents, and web content for accessibility compliance.
  • Proficiency with accessibility testing and remediation tools such as Adobe Acrobat Pro Accessibility Checker, Ally, WAVE, and Deque Axe Monitor.
  • Strong understanding of HTML, CSS, ARIA, and other web technologies related to accessibility.
  • Experience working with Canvas LMS and other digital learning platforms.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional accessibility certification such as IAAP Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) or Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS).
  • Experience scripting or coding (e.g., Python, JavaScript) to support automation in accessibility workflows.
  • Familiarity with document tagging standards, metadata, and PDF/UA compliance.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Occasional lifting of materials and equipment up to 25 lbs. may be required.
  • Extended periods of computer use.

Special Conditions

  • This is an on-site position, remote or hybrid work is not available.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to meet project deadlines.
  • This is an in-person position for a 6-month contract (January - June 2026) based on the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus.
