Willdan Energy Solutions (WES), part of Willdan Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: WLDN) is seeking an entry-level Project Engineer I. WES is a national leader in energy engineering and our clients include utilities, municipalities, hospitals, schools, hotels, and private enterprises. WES's expertise covers building system retrofits, retro-commissioning, electrification/decarbonization, demonstrations of new technologies, energy efficiency education/outreach, and sustainability consulting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The selected candidate will work in a collaborative environment with our engineering staff, program managers, and project development team to develop and evaluate efficiency projects for our customers within utility program framework. The candidate must be able to work independently, perform engineering calculations, and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders. This is an entry-level technical role with oversight by senior-level engineers.

  • Support various program and project management teams; assist with project analysis and report generation.
  • Work in a collaborative environment with our engineering staff, program managers, project managers, and project development team to evaluate, develop, and process efficiency project applications for our customers within utility program framework.
  • Collect and evaluate project information to verify eligibility, quantify savings, potential incentives, costs, and benefits, consistent with program and policy requirements.
  • Prepare savings calculations using spreadsheets and energy modeling programs (eQUEST, EnergyPro, EnergyPlus, etc).
  • Work on and adeptly switch between a variety of projects and technical tasks, including completing project fieldwork, energy audits, engineering analysis, cost estimating, and report production.
  • Develop understanding of the California energy efficiency policy framework as it applies to project development and program implementation.
  • Carry out task assignments within allotted time, maintain project tracking systems with pertinent project updates, and communicate status reports to relevant internal stakeholders.
  • Assists with program design and implementation through evaluation of new measure offerings and development of implementation processes.
  • Support strategic engineering initiatives.
  • Use effective writing and verbal skills to support the entire program team to deliver the target energy savings to meet our clients' goals.
  • Provide timely, efficient, and proactive follow-up.
  • Hybrid work schedule with 2-3 days in-office or on site-visits per week.

Job Requirements / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Environmental, or Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical equipment operating principles.
  • Competency with technical and scientific topics/analysis.
  • Keen attention to detail. Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Works well in a collaborative work environment, comfortable engaging with diverse stakeholders.
  • Computer proficiency, experience with Windows-based office applications, such as Microsoft Excel, required.
  • Some local travel required.
  • Experience in energy engineering or related fields.
  • Familiarity with energy engineering concepts and principles.
  • Familiarity with California energy efficiency rebate programs.
  • Familiarity with California eTRM and deemed measures.
  • Familiarity with electrification/decarbonization technologies.
