Position description

Springer Lab Assistant Specialist

The Springer Lab is now recruiting for an Assistant Specialist. The areas of specialization/responsibilities for this position include studying the effects of smoke and aerosol inhalation on cardiac function and structure, and vascular endothelial response, in rodent models.

Required qualifications:



  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five years of research experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Practical experience in measurement of femoral artery flow-mediated dilation in living rats.
  • Practical experience in operation of UCSF tobacco smoke generation systems and exposure of rats and mice.
  • Practical experience in operation of Gram Research vaping machine and its use to expose rats to mainstream cigarette smoke, free-base e-cigarette aerosol, JUUL aerosol, and marijuana smoke.
  • Practical experience in operation and testing of ultrasonic vaping devices, including generation of aerosols from these devices and exposure of rats.
  • Practical experience in surgical placement of electrocardiography telemeters in rats and subsequent measurement and analysis of heart rate variability.
  • Experience with flow cytometry and pulmonary epithelial cell harvest.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    -Practical experience writing and submitting manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.


Responsibilities:

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

The Assistant Specialist hired for this position will lead parts of an ongoing NIH-funded project to study potentially additive effects of both smoking and vaping relate to only smoking or only vaping. This is a 100%-time position.
