The Department of Teacher Education in the College of Education at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month Assistant Professor of Practice to begin September 1, 2026.

About the Department/School/Area

The teacher education department in the College of Education has an innovative teacher preparation program that meets the unique needs of all our students. In collaboration with school districts and community college partners across Texas, TechTeach, our clinically intensive, competency-based program, is preparing educators who are ready to impact students on their first day in the classroom.

Major/Essential Functions

At Texas Tech University, the Professor of Practice title is used to recruit individuals with exceptional backgrounds and achievements in academic, business, government, or other professional practice. Primary responsibilities normally will be to teach in an area of expertise, mentor students in professional and career preparation, and liaise with professional contacts and entities on behalf of the department or program.

In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

As a faculty member in the Department of Teacher Education, you will be expected to:

  • Teach and supervise literacy education courses aligned with state certification standards, including the Science of Teaching Reading (STR) and state-level literacy initiatives
  • Support the design and delivery of evidence-based literacy coursework for teacher candidates pursuing EC-6 Generalist and 4-8 RLA certifications, ensuring alignment with Texas Education Agency standards and best practices in reading pedagogy
  • Collaborate with TTU teacher education faculty and community partners to sustain and expand TTU's leadership in strengthening literacy educator preparation and meeting local and state hiring demands
  • Engage in program evaluation, data management and monitoring, and research related to literacy teacher education
  • Support strategic initiatives to increase enrollment and diversify participation in literacy education programs across the university
The Assistant Professor of Practice will work closely with the Department Chair, TED Faculty Anchors, Professional Development Facilitators, Site Coordinators, and Lecturers to strengthen the undergraduate literacy education program and ensure alignment with departmental and institutional goals.

Faculty Qualifications


  • A conferred doctorate by September 1, 2026, from a major accredited university in Literacy Education or a closely related field
  • At least three years of PK-12 literacy teaching experience
  • Demonstrates an emerging record of scholarly productivity in literacy education

Preferred Qualifications


  • Strong content and pedagogical knowledge in literacy, aligned with the responsibilities of the role
  • Holds a current state-issued teaching certificate
  • Thorough understanding of Texas EC-12 literacy curriculum standards and teacher licensure requirements
  • At least two years of university-level literacy-related teaching experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in literacy teacher education research, supported by relevant coursework, training, and/or scholarly publications
  • Proven ability to use data to inform and improve instructional practices in literacy teacher education
  • Experience building and sustaining partnerships with stakeholders to design, implement, and evaluate innovations in literacy teacher preparation
