Position description

The Director will be a faculty member at UC Davis SOM and dedicate 50% of their time serving as the Director of Research for SCNCRC, as well as the Director of the Shriners Partnership for the SOM. The Director will serve as the strategic and administrative leader for research efforts at SCNCRC, setting a vision for research and recruiting and supporting the investigators. The Director reports to the Vice Dean for Research at UC Davis and to the Vice President for Research for Shriners Children's Hospitals.

The next Director will address the following opportunities and challenges:



  • Set a strategic vision for research at SCNCRC.

    Shriner's Children's Hospitals are dedicated to serving children with orthopedic conditions, neuromuscular conditions, burn injuries, cleft lip and palate, and spinal cord injuries. This service includes the highest quality care and innovative research to advance the understanding and treatment of these conditions. The Director will set a vision for research at SCNCRC that aligns with the clinical mission and is rooted in translational and clinical research to impact children's health. This vision will also leverage the opportunities across the UC Davis campus, bringing together researchers across numerous areas to facilitate breakthrough discoveries.

  • Recruit, retain, and mentor faculty and staff.

    The Director will be responsible for growing the research enterprise at SCNCRC, with an emphasis on recruitment and faculty development. The Director will recruit faculty that fit within their vision for the research program and provide mentorship to existing and new faculty, staff, and trainees and guide faculty as they develop their own research programs.

  • Maintain and build collaborations across the Shriner's system and UC Davis.

    Team science and interdisciplinary research are increasingly important in advancing projects from bench to bedside, and the next Director will be active in identifying and nurturing partnerships and collaborations. Shriner's has five research centers across North America and is establishing a new bench to bedside researchinstitute in Atlanta that will support the work of 50 PIs. The Director will seek out opportunities to work across the Shriner's system to advance research projects that impact children's lives.

    UC Davis is highly collaborative across its broad research portfolio, and the next Director will embody this collaborative culture, the immense and diverse research expertise, and top tier infrastructure of the SOM to build and support teams as they work to improve children's health and quality of life. This work is exemplified by the Department of Orthopedics at UC Davis, a top 100 orthopedic program by Becker's Hospital Review. The Department partners with SCNC to operate the 23rd ranked pediatric orthopedics group in the country, as ranked by U.S. News and World Report, and has a Lawrence J. Ellison Musculoskeltal Research Center. The collaborative Shriners/UC Davis burn center is among the top burn programs in the nation, serving both children (SCNC) and adults (UC Davis). The Burn program has established clinical, translational, and bench research programs including resuscitation, innovative wound technologies, pharmacogenomics, and response to injury supported by both Shriners and federal funding. In addition, the Burn center houses the national American Burn Association Data Coordinating Center, supporting national and international multicenter burn trials.

  • Nurture the partnership between UC Davis and Shriners Children's Northern California.

    UC Davis and Shriners Children's Northern California have a longstanding relationship, and the Director will play an integral role in maintaining and growing this partnership. The Director will serve as the primary connection between SCNCRC and the SOM, representing both organizations and aligning interests, resources, and opportunities to advance research across both units.



Expectations and responsibilities as an Academic Senate faculty member include:



  • Clinical service in the area of specialty, as applicable.
  • Teach medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Conduct bench/clinical/translational research leading to peer-reviewed publication. d. University and professional service. Further expectations are determined by faculty series.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • MD; PhD; or equivalent terminal degree in a related area, including but not limited to Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Neurology/Neuromuscular disease, tissue engineering/regenerative medicine, burns, inflammation, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. A Physician-Scientist is strongly preferred, and the successful candidate will have a program of research that emphasizes clinical impact. For MD applicants, additional requirements include board certification and fellowship training as applicable to one's specialty, and subspecialty if applicable, and applicants must possess or be eligible for a California Medical License.

  • Academic credentials that qualify for appointment at the rank of Full Professor (preferred) or a senior step for Associate Professor.


Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

  • Nationally recognized scholar focused on children in an area that aligns with the mission of SNCRC, including tissue engineering, device engineering (e.g., apnea analysis), implantable limbs, osteointegration, motion analysis, gene therapy, and precision medicine, wound healing, and motion analysis/exoskeleton/robotics,.
  • A strong reputation for successful research and leadership of an interdisciplinary research program, division, or department, as well as knowledge of relevant national research trends, and a significant record of peer-reviewed scientific publications and success in securing extramural research funding. Emphasis on translational science leadership is preferred.
  • Ability to lead at the strategic, tactical, and administrative levels, including experience managing space and financial resources.
  • Demonstrated creativity and collaboration skills to leverage assets at UC Davis - an extensive research ecosystem.
  • Demonstrated prior success at leading interprofessional teams and working across units.
  • Ability to connect and nurture relationships with community members who serve as advisors and donors.
  • Demonstrated leadership in diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence efforts.
  • A strong history of written and verbal communication with a track record of working in a matrixed organization, and interpersonal skills that demonstrate the capacity to work collaboratively and effectively with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire colleagues and staff to achieve excellent results.
  • Demonstrated success in managing and leading a complex organization undergoing significant and persistent change, with the ability to innovate and generate new ideas.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a unit's financial resources including: operating within a defined budget, reviewing financial analyses and plans, and providing regular reports to institutional leadership.
  • Demonstrated success in enhancing the research agenda of an academic unit or program, in responding to faculty needs and building environments that enhance research innovation, and in building programs and environments that enhance research productivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to build a sense of community and to actively engage faculty, staff, students, and alumni in support of a shared strategic vision.
  • A collegial, consultative management style, with the ability to be strong and decisive while also taking into account the needs and perspectives of faculty, staff, and students.
  • A high level of integrity and professionalism, and a commitment to support the professional development of faculty and staff.
