Overview

The Government Relations Advisor is responsible for managing strategic engagement with key government entities and political stakeholders. This role focuses on building and maintaining relationships with federal agencies, congressional committees, and political party representatives to advance Navy Federal's public policy objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute comprehensive government relations strategies to support Navy Federal's policy priorities
  • Serve as a senior liaison and lead engagement with key government bodies, congressional committees, and regulators relevant to credit unions
  • Develop and maintain relationships with political party representatives and staff
  • Represent Navy Federal in high-level meetings, briefings, and policy forums
  • Provide strategic guidance on political and regulatory developments that may impact the organization
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g., Military Affairs, Legal, Compliance, Risk) to align advocacy efforts and policy messaging
  • Support the development of briefing materials, talking points, and strategic communications for senior leadership
  • Advise on political dynamics and legislative opportunities to advance Navy Federal's interests

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business or public administration, operations analysis, legal studies, or the equivalent combination of training, education and experience
  • 7+ years of experience in government relations, public policy, or legislative affairs
  • Deep expertise in legislative and regulatory processes, particularly those affecting financial services
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategic advocacy plans
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships across political and institutional lines
  • Strong strategic thinking, communication, and negotiation skills
  • Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence diverse stakeholders
  • Demonstrated success in navigating complex political and regulatory environments
  • Ability to operate independently and exercise extensive judgment in high-impact situations
  • Recognized as an expert in government relations and public policy within the organization and externally
  • Desired - Advanced degree (e.g., MPA, JD, MA in Public Policy) preferred
  • Desired - Working knowledge of Navy Federal's objectives, functions, and policies
  • Desired - Thorough knowledge of the current and future challenges facing the credit union movement
