Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned Master of Public Health (MPH) degree or Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) or Public Health-related graduate degree.
Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)

  • Earned doctorate degree -in public health or an associated discipline.
  • Evidence of teaching experience.
  • Evidence of service to the university and/or community.
  • Evidence of public health practice experience.
  • Evidence of research in one of the core areas of public health (biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health policy and management, and/or social and behavioral science).

Description of the Department or Unit
The newly created Department of Public Health comprises nationally accredited and recognized programs, including the Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health and the online Master of Public Health ( MPH) program. The Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health is currently accredited as a standalone Baccalaureate program by the Council on Education for Public Health ( CEPH), and with the addition of the MPH, is seeking accreditation as a Public Health Program. The department currently supports 11 faculty with diverse research and practice backgrounds. It also enjoys numerous strong, long-term relationships with regional public health professionals and agencies. Learn more at https://publichealth.appstate.edu/ Appalachian State University's Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) is transforming the health and quality of lives of individuals, families, and communities through inclusive practices, interprofessional collaboration, and innovation in teaching, scholarship, service, and clinical outreach. The BCHS supports over 3,800 students in nine undergraduate and nine graduate degree programs, organized into six academic departments. The programs are located in Boone in the Holmes Convocation Center and the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, the cornerstone of Boone's Wellness District. We also have a presence on our new campus in Hickory. The college supports the Appalachian Institute for Health and Wellness and has a collaborative partnership with the Wake Forest School of Medicine's Physician Assistant Program and multiple health and human service agencies across the region. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach 12 credit hours in the fall semester and 12 credit hours in the spring semester across multiple public health courses in the curriculum (this is reduced to 9 credit hours in the fall and 9 credit hours in the spring if a research expectation is negotiated).   • Engage in programmatic work and activities.
  • Participate in service activities for the department, university, and community.
  • Provide students with academic and professional mentoring.
  • Align course content with accreditation standards.
  • Attend program, department, and college meetings.
  • If applicable, maintain an active program of research and scholarship

Suggested Salary Range Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
