Position: Asphalt Paver Operator
Pay Range: $25.00 - 30.00/hr. (based on experience and qualifications)
Position Overview
Francis O. Day Company is seeking an experienced Asphalt Paver Operator to support our paving operations. This position is responsible for the safe, efficient, and high-quality operation of asphalt paving equipment on roadway, commercial, and industrial paving projects.

The Paver Operator plays a critical role in producing smooth, consistent asphalt mats while working closely with screed operators, laborers, roller operators, foremen, and quality control personnel. Candidates must demonstrate strong equipment knowledge, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and quality.

This position is hands-on, field-based, and requires experience operating asphalt pavers in active paving environments. Key Responsibilities
  • Operate asphalt pavers safely and efficiently to achieve specified grades, depths, widths, and surface quality.
  • Perform daily pre-operation inspections and operator care tasks, including cleaning, lubrication, and visual checks of paver components.
  • Coordinate closely with screed operators, material transfer vehicles, roller operators, and crew members to maintain consistent paving operations.
  • Monitor material flow, head of material, conveyor systems, augers, and screed performance.
  • Make necessary adjustments to paver controls to maintain proper mat quality and alignment.
  • Follow paving plans, job specifications, and direction from foremen and superintendents.
  • Identify mechanical issues or performance concerns and report them promptly to supervisors or equipment management.
  • Support Total Process Reliability (TPR), Operator Care, and Preventive Maintenance initiatives.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area around the paver.
  • Comply with all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and job site requirements.
Minimum Requirements
  • 3+ years of experience operating asphalt pavers on roadway or commercial paving projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of asphalt paving operations, including material behavior, screed operation, and paving techniques.
  • Experience operating common paver brands and models (e.g., Blaw-Knox, Cat, Volvo, Dynapac, or similar).
  • Ability to read grades, follow stringline or grade control systems, and maintain consistent mat quality.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and understanding of paver systems (hydraulics, conveyors, augers, screeds).
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.
Physical & Work Environment
  • Outdoor construction environment in varying weather conditions.
  • Extended periods of standing, walking, climbing on and off equipment, and operating controls.
  • Exposure to noise, heat, dust, and asphalt materials.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as required.
