The Opportunity with McKinstry
We are seeking a Project Development Manager to join our Distributed Energy Resource (DER) team. In this role, you will be responsible for leading successful outcomes for assigned key and complex portfolio of projects, oversee development phase of assigned projects including internal resources, subcontractors, vendors, safety compliance, cash management, client billings, monthly forecast projections, scope, schedule, and budget. Execute and manage contract requirements and ensure client satisfaction. This
position owns project financials with the authority to make decisions on the portfolio of projects. Additional responsibilities include:
Project Management
- Develop high quality projects through all discretionary and AHJ permitting, successfully transitioning to the construction team when permits are issued.
- Maintain a single point of accountability for project development through project completion.
- Work with clients and business development staff to develop technical, high value solutions that solve our clients' needs.
- Successfully manage contract deliverables including scope, schedule, budget, and customer expectations throughout the project development process.
- Negotiate various vendor and services contracts, minimize organizational risks around scope, schedule, budget, and margin goals.
- Document and resolve customer service, support and billing issues throughout project development.
- Throughout the project development process, prepare and lead all project financial reviews and reporting in the systems of record (Viewpoint, Planisware, Procore). Manage project cash flow including any outstanding AP/AR prior to start of construction.
- Reinforce use of organizational best in class Engineering and Project Management tools and techniques.
- Work closely with the Construction Project Manager and the Construction Program Manager to ensure constructability and means/methods are considered throughout project development.
- Ensure the Cx and QA/QC requirements of the project are considered throughout project development.
- Work hand in hand with the Construction Project Manager (CPM) to ensure a smooth handoff into construction, continue to support the CPM throughout the construction of the project as the development point of accountability.
Leadership and Communication
- Successfully manage and lead project teams to a common goal.
- Continuous weekly reporting of project health and deliverables to Dir of Ops, Development.
- Serve as the primary project manager until transition to CPM.
- Inform internal and external stakeholders of changes to the project, keep a regular cadence with the Business Developer.
- Make presentations to a variety of audiences, act as technical subject matter expert. i.e. client, finance partners, planning/zoning board, public hearings, property associations, Utilities.
- Provide regular reporting to clients in any applicable format and in Procore.
- Keep the Construction Project Manager informed of development activities and changes to the project.
Business Development
- Develop and maintain a close working relationship with the Business Developer on the project.
- Develop and maintain client relationships at a variety of levels.
- Support the Business Developer to strategize ways of driving additional work with our customers.
- Support Business Development staff by generating preliminary assessments, technical solutions, fee proposals, presentations, studies, schedules and other project development information and materials.
- Maintain relationships with building owners, contractors, consultants and vendors within the industry.
- Mitigate risk on behalf of the company.
Team Management
- Coach members of the Project Development team.
- Lead successful project teams.
- Mentor assigned project development staff.
- Manage cross functional teams.
- Act as steward of McKinstry culture; communicate and influence policies and procedures.
Other duties as assigned.
What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry
Bachelor's or equivelent
12+ years of experience in project operations or development management in DER.
Workflow optimization, risk management, DER project workflows & permitting, BESS, DER, Solar, PV, PPAs, stakeholder management, strong public speaking, client engagement, financial projections, matrix management, contract negotiation

The pay range for this position is $141,570 - $243,900 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Base pay information is based on market location. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
