Job Summary


Employment Duration: 3 months

Under the supervision of registered nursing staff, the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) provides a wide range of patient care services to support the safety, comfort, and well-being of patients. This role performs assigned nursing procedures, observes and reports patient conditions, administers medications and treatments as ordered, assists with examinations and procedures, and supports interdisciplinary care delivery in an ambulatory clinical setting.

About Ward 86 Clinic

Ward 86 is the HIV/AIDS Clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center and has been a national leader in HIV care since the beginning of the epidemic. It is the largest clinic providing primary medical care for people living with HIV within the San Francisco Health Network and also offers preventive services, including PrEP, for patients at risk for HIV infection. Ward 86 provides care to approximately 2,500 patients annually, delivering more than 24,000 clinical encounters each year through a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Care

  • Perform patient assessments, including vital signs, physical assessments, electrocardiograms, point-of-care testing, and specimen collection
  • Prepare and administer medications, therapeutic injections, immunizations, and treatments as prescribed, in collaboration with providers and RNs
  • Monitor and evaluate patient responses to treatments and report changes in condition to the care team
  • Establish venous access, perform venipuncture, and support laboratory and diagnostic testing
  • Provide care to patients receiving primary, specialty, and urgent care services
  • Assist with tracheostomy, ostomy, oxygen administration, suctioning, and gastric feeding as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records and documentation
  • Support care coordination, patient follow-up, appointment reminders, and linkage to care activities
  • Provide coverage and clinical support for other LVNs and Medical Assistants as needed

Administrative and Operational Support

  • Participate in clinic, nursing, and staff meetings
  • Assist with ordering and restocking clinical supplies and exam rooms
  • Ensure timely and accurate routing of specimens to laboratories
  • Adhere to departmental and hospital policies and participate in quality control activities
  • Support quality improvement initiatives, special projects, and clinic documentation as assigned

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Licensed Vocational Nurse in the State of California.
  • Current CPR/BLS Certification through the American Heart Association.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and computer skills (including electronic health records).
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment.
