Summary:

Surgical technologists work under the supervision and delegatory authority of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists apply the principles of asepsis and sterile technique in combination with the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and equipment and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of surgical procedures.

Responsibilities:

1. Provides skilled, safe care within scope of practice.

a. Gathers, checks and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure

b. Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.

c. Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator.

d. Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.

e. Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.

f. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.

g. Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.

h. Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.

i. Sponges or suctions the operative site.

j. Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.

k. Coordinates the camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon.

l. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.

m. Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.

n. Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.

o. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.

p. Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room.

q. Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient.

r. Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.

2. Assists with the teaching of newly hired technologists. Serves as a resource and role model to teammates.

3. Is flexible and available to work a variety of shifts to ensure coverage for the area.

4. Responds appropriately to emergency and code situations. Remains calm and works effectively in stressful situations.

5. Completes continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements.

6. Presents and promotes a professional demeanor at all times, exhibits high standards of customer service, supports responsibility, pride, and teamwork, and offers reasonable solutions for problems.

7. Demonstrates appropriate interaction with and provides recommended care and services to all patients. Ensures the delivery of age appropriate, culturally sensitive and ethical care for patients.

8. Applies knowledge of principles of standard precautions. Routinely uses PPE to avoid risk of exposure to self and others.

9. Contributes to the efficiency, effectiveness, quality and safety of the operating room by working cooperatively, respectfully and with integrity.

Other information:

Education

Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited Surgical Technologist 18-month or Associate program.

Licensure/ Certification

NBSTSA Certification required.

BCLS Certification required.

Experience

One year as a surgical scrub technologist preferred.

New graduates are encouraged to apply.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

*Working knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, suture, and/or specialty supplies.

*Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology pertinent to patient procedures.

*Demonstrates awareness of environmental safety practices for patient, self and team at all times.

*Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

*Basic PC proficiency with the ability to learn new software tools.

*Ability to stand and/or walk for duration of shift and meet the physical requirements of the job.

Valid NC Driver's License: No

If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
