The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for two (2) full-time, 9-month, Assistant Professor of Practice positions in First-Year Writing to begin September 1, 2026.

About the College

Founded in 1925 as one of the university's four original colleges, the College of Arts & Sciences is comprised of 15 departments, offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. The College has more than 10,000 students enrolled representing more than a quarter of the overall Texas Tech University student population while maintaining a 22:1 student to faculty ratio.

About the Department/School/Area

The Department of English is a diverse, dynamic, and interdisciplinary department with 45 tenure-line faculty and undergraduate and graduate degree programs in English and in Technical Communication and Rhetoric. Texas Tech's First-Year Writing Program is housed in the Department of English and serves over 4,000 students a semester. The program was recently heavily revised in 2018, with revitalized and reimagined curricula, professional development, and course delivery models. The program is a two-course sequence: English 1301 grounds students in the reading, writing, and rhetorical practices necessary for engaging in civic discourse and for success in college and beyond. Major/Essential Functions

At Texas Tech University, the Professor of Practice title is used to recruit individuals with exceptional backgrounds and achievements in academic, business, government, or other professional practice. Primary responsibilities normally will be to teach in an area of expertise, mentor students in professional and career preparation, and liaise with professional contacts and entities on behalf of the department or program.

In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a robust student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with various student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

Faculty Qualifications

• Terminal degree (PhD or MFA) in English, Rhetoric and Writing Studies, or a related field by time of hire;
• At least 4 years of demonstrated record of effectiveness as a teacher at the college level (experience as a graduate student counts); and
• Experience mentoring or providing professional development for teachers.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

1. Experience mentoring graduate students as novice teachers; and
2. Experience working with various student populations and first-generation students.
