Job Description

1.0 PURPOSE:

  • To detail specific tasks and responsibilities for the position of Yard Truck Driver.

  • To ensure employees in this role perform their job as safely, effectively, and efficiently as possible.

2.0 SCOPE:

  • This document is used from date of hire throughout training.

  • Serves as an ongoing reference for the Yard Truck Driver regarding required tasks.

  • This document is not all-inclusive and may be supplemented as needed.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Transport goods and freight from one location to another using a truck or tractor-trailer.

  • Complete a pre/post trip inspection on tractor and trailer before and after each trip to ensure safety and functionality.

  • Inspect load to ensure cargo is properly loaded and secured.

  • Notify dispatch if a load is not properly secured and use straps/load locks when necessary.

  • Review BOL for accuracy.

  • Plan routes, fueling locations, safe havens, breaks, and deliveries to meet customer requirements and deadlines.

  • Complete electronic DVIR via ELD for any deficiencies identified during pre/post trip inspections.

  • Contact maintenance team and Penske repair hotline when repairs, inspections, or certifications are needed for tractor or trailer.

  • Schedule preventative maintenance and repairs with local lease providers (Penske/Ryder).

  • Contact safety and dispatch immediately after a safety incident and follow the Company Accident/Incident process.

  • Complete monthly Near Miss documentation.

  • Ensure on-time pick-up and delivery from consignee.

  • Utilize onboard TMS system for dispatch and communication purposes.

  • Comply with all traffic laws and FMCSR regulations, including hours of service restrictions.

  • Communicate effectively with dispatchers and transportation personnel.

  • Monitor weather and road conditions and adjust driving accordingly.

  • Manage cargo securement and load distribution to prevent damage or accidents.

  • Complete and submit daily trip sheets.

  • Submit weekly documentation including, but not limited to, trip sheets, lumper receipts, and fuel receipts.

  • Communicate professionally with dispatchers, safety department, leadership, associates, motorists, shippers, receivers, law enforcement, and DOT officers.

  • Pull the 5th wheel release, tandem axle releases, and open/close trailer doors in all weather conditions.

  • Adjust trailer pin height using the landing gear crank for proper tractor-trailer connection or disconnection.

  • Sit for long periods of time in accordance with hours of service regulations.

  • Adapt quickly to road conditions, environment, traffic patterns, weather, and job demands.

  • Work weekends as needed.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership.

  • Load and unload trailers using hand tools, fork truck, or pallet jack.

  • Pick and pack materials for shipping.

  • Safely utilize powered equipment (reach truck, fork truck, pallet jack, etc.) upon certification at each Company location and in accordance with facility rules.

  • Utilize company WMS to manage inventory and trailer loading/unloading.

  • Maintain accurate inventory counts.

  • Perform cycle counts and physical inventories.

  • Assist in breaking down empty gaylords and maintaining the baler.

  • Assist other drivers and material handlers as assigned by leadership.

  • Refrain from using powered equipment at any facility until certified at that specific location.

  • Shuttle equipment to and from repair locations (e.g., Penske, Ryder, outside vendors).

  • Open trailer doors using the trailer door strap (peekaboo strap).

  • Chain tires during inclement weather in accordance with state regulations.

  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness in accordance with maintenance processes.

  • Complete yard checks as requested by leadership.

4.0 OTHER DUTIES, AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain a safe and friendly work environment.

  • Perform other functions as necessary or as assigned.

  • Assist in maintaining silos and cleaning.

  • Report damages and unsafe conditions.

  • Assist other Material Handlers as needed or directed by the Warehouse Manager.

  • Actively engage in safety and quality programs.

  • Identify and report safety concerns.

  • Maintain responsibility for personal safety, co-worker safety, and environmental safety.

  • Maintain a current, non-expired Class A CDL and valid DOT Medical Certificate.

  • Attend all operational and safety meetings as requested by leadership.

5.0 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers.

  • Moderate organizational skills with the ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Ability to read Standard English text for pack list and job requirements.

  • Ability to communicate with individuals of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.

  • Ability to perform effectively in environments with frequent workload changes and competing demands.

  • Ability to use basic math (add, subtract, multiply, divide) for material calculations.

  • Ability to make appropriate job decisions following standard policies and precedents.

  • Adequate verbal communication skills to use radio and/or paging systems.

  • Ability to recognize emergency situations and take appropriate action.

  • Ability to stand and walk for a minimum of 7 hours during an 8-hour shift.

  • Hearing sufficient to recognize and respond to warnings, alarms, and forklift horns.

  • Proficient skill in JDE.

  • Ability to frequently lift, push, and pull loads up to 35 lbs. without an assisting device.

  • Ability to safely operate a forklift in high-traffic, low-clearance areas without posing a safety risk.

  • Ability to climb ladders and steps safely without assistance and without risk of sudden alterations in consciousness.

  • Possess a valid Class A CDL.

  • Minimum of 1 year of verifiable comparable driving experience within the last 3 years, including pulling 53 ft trailers.

  • Meet the physical qualifications and examination requirements under 49 CFR 391.41 DOT regulations.

  • Ability to use TMS, WMS, and ELD systems.
