THE POSITION

The Department of Corrections at the State Correctional Institution at Mercer is seeking a highly motivated Corrections Wastewater Treatment Plant Foreman to join our team. In this important role, you will supervise inmates who help operate and maintain the facility's wastewater treatment plant. Your leadership will ensure that daily operations run safely, systems stay in compliance, and the institution maintains a clean and secure environment. This is a unique opportunity to use your technical skills while guiding and mentoring inmate workers in meaningful, hands-on tasks that support the entire facility.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will direct the operation, maintenance, and repair of key equipment such as motors, pumps, compressors, valves, filters, chlorinators, digesters, aerators, and grit removers. You will also perform and supervise sampling and chemical testing to monitor pH levels, chlorine residuals, settleable solids, and biochemical oxygen demand. Your responsibilities include scheduling inmate work, assigning tasks, reviewing performance, and training inmates in proper procedures. Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, pass days will be determined during the hiring process.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.

Additional Requirements:
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Successful completion of Basic Training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater Systems Operators as a wastewater treatment plant operator that is equal to or higher than a Class C, Subclass 8, 9, and 11.
  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
