Job Description

PURPOSE:

The Driver Training Coordinator will be responsible for utilizing driver performance reviews, skill gap analyses, industry research and observation to create, maintain, and improve CMV standard operating procedures. Additionally, this individual will create, maintain, and improve effective training processes and continuous quality improvement programs to enhance the performance and safety of CMV operators.

2.0 SCOPE:

This document is used from date of hire throughout training and as a reference for the Lead Driver Trainer for tasks to be completed. This document is not all inclusive.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES:

3.1 Driving Responsibilities: 10% of time

  • Transport goods and freight from one location to another using a truck or tractor-trailer.
  • Complete a pre/post trip inspection on tractor and trailer before and after each trip to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Inspect load to ensure cargo is properly loaded and secured
  • If load is not properly secured notify dispatch and if necessary use straps/load locks for securement
  • Review BOL for accuracy
  • Plan the route, breaks, and deliveries to meet customer requirements and deadlines.
  • Complete electronic DVIR via ELD for any deficiencies identified during pre/post trip
  • Contact maintenance team and Penske repair hotline when repairs/inspections/certifications are needed for tractor or trailer.
  • Schedule preventative maintenance and repairs with local Lease provider (Penske/Ryder)
  • Contact safety and dispatch immediately after a safety incident
  • Complete monthly Near Miss documentation
  • On-Time pick-up and Delivery from consignee
  • Utilize onboard TMS system for dispatch and communication purposes
  • Comply with all traffic laws and FMCSR regulations, including hours of service restrictions.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatchers and other transportation personnel.
  • Monitor weather and road conditions to adjust driving accordingly.
  • Manage cargo securement and load distribution to prevent damage or accidents.
  • Complete and submit daily trip sheet
  • Submit weekly any necessary documentation to include but not limited to daily trip sheet, lumper receipts, fuel receipts, etc.
  • Communicate professionally with dispatchers, safety department, other company departments/associates, other motorists, shippers, receivers, law enforcement personnel, and DOT officers but not limited too.
  • Perform all daily driver function per company and DOT policies

3.2 Training Responsibilities: 90% of time

  • Training and Instruction for CMV drivers (new hires)
  • Conduct classroom and on the road training sessions for new CMV driver.
  • Teaching essential driving skills, safety protocols and traffic law, and company expectation and processes.
  • Training and Instruction (existing drivers)-Conduct classroom, online and on the road training session for existing drivers annually to improve essential driving skills, safety protocols, traffic laws, and company expectations and processes.
  • Travel to facilities to perform onsite risk assessments for commercial driver processes and propose process changes as necessary to create safe operating procedures.
  • Travel to facilities to perform onsite evaluations and continuous improvement training.
  • Travel to facilities to perform remedial training as identified in driver metrics, driver and or onsite leadership requests.
  • Provide approval for all company CMV drivers to operate a commercial motor vehicle.
  • Work with Compliance team Manager and Director to create and adjust training plans and procedures.
  • Dynamically adjust onsite training based on driver/facility needs and/or performance of trainee in evaluation.
  • Evaluate CMV driver SOPs quarterly to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Obtain JJ Keller Certification as a Trainer (Company provided).
  • Ensure all training vehicles are in good working condition and meet company and federal safety standards
  • Evaluate driver capabilities through training modules and ride alongs and other various assessment tools
  • Practice and coach defensive driving techniques with students/drivers.
  • Provide coaching, feedback and mentorship to drivers to improve their driving skills and safety awareness
  • With the support of Compliance Director and CMV Manager, create and maintain all paperwork regarding commercial driver training processes and SOPs.
  • Stay up to date with current knowledge of transportation regulations
  • Travel to locations to instruct drivers in driving, safety, onboard system usage, and company procedures

3.3 Dock Responsibilities: As Requested

  • Work weekends as needed.
  • Any additional duties as assigned by leadership
  • Load and unload trailers (hand/fork truck/pallet jack)
  • Pick/Pack materials for shipping
  • Upon certification at each Company location, safely utilize powered equipment (reach truck/fork truck/pallet jack.etc) per facility rules and regulations
  • Utilize company WMS to manage inventory and trailer loading/unloading.
  • Travel to Company warehouses to provide onsite support in all warehouse functions
  • Maintain accurate inventory counts
  • Perform cycle counts and physical inventories
  • Assist in breaking down empty gaylords/maintain baler
  • Assist other drivers/material handlers as assigned by leadership
  • Do not use power equipment in a facility until certified at that specific location

4.0 OTHER DUTIES, AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe and friendly work
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by leadership.
  • Be actively engaged in safety and quality programs.
  • Identify and report safety concerns.
  • Must maintain a current Class A CDL and valid DOT Certification.
  • Role will travel 25-50% on average. Travel may exceed this amount based on needs.

5.0 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
  • Moderate organizational skills including the ability to complete multiple task simultaneously.
  • Perform effectively in environments with frequent workload changes and competing demands.
  • Make appropriate job decisions following standard company policies and past precedents.
  • Posses a Valid Class A CDL
  • 1 year of verifiable comparable driving experience to include pulling 53ft trailers.
  • Meet the physical qualifications and examination under 391.41 DOT reg.
