Intro to Position

NPR is looking for someone with a keen interest, and ear, to create short form audio and video that blends NPR's reporting and discourse with the world of fundraising and promotions, heard by millions of listeners across the US. This role works to provide relevant and timely promotional assets, creates compelling fundraising messages for stations to broadcast and for deployment on NPR owned platforms, and supports other efforts in these spaces. This position is responsible for all aspects of production and distribution of fundraising audio spots, maintaining an understanding of the needs of NPR member stations across the country, and working with colleagues across NPR to effectively achieve promotional and fundraising goals. A strong understanding of NPR's mission and values will be central to success.

This is a union-represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with (select one) SAG-AFTRA.

This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook. All editorial staff are bound by this guidance. Editorial staff are defined as staff members who play a role in shaping the journalistic or creative direction of NPR's content, including events.

  • Materials to Submit: Candidates must submit a cover letter as part of their application. The cover letter must address the ways in which your past experience will shape your approach to working on promotional and fundraising content for NPR.



Responsibilities

  • Work on all aspects of the production and distribution of NPR's fundraising materials and maintain relationships with both external station staff and internal teams who contribute to the materials.
  • Bring organizational and project management skills to work that involves colleagues across internal and external departments and organizations.
  • Produce and distribute a variety of audio promos and promotional assets for NPR member stations' use.
  • Write and distribute the NPR Day Sheet to station colleagues, serve as editor for other colleagues' work.
  • Provide backfill for production on the funding credit team and across other team functions - including, but not limited to funding credit production and SiriusXM channel maintenance - as necessary.
  • Assist in the development of video protocols and standards in the same broader work areas outlined above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4+ years of professional experience (not including internship) in news production, station fundraising or other relevant field.
  • 2+ years of professional experience (not including internship) in audio mixing/editing from start to finish, using tools such as ProTools, Adobe Audition or MTE.
  • Strong writing chops with a special interest in telling stories and building to a clear call to action in very short scripts.
  • A firm grasp of the basics of journalistic ethics and integrity.
  • Developed organizational skills with a special focus on planning, time management, prioritization, and efficiency.
  • Proven ability to work well with others, demonstrating respect for diverse internal & external stakeholders.
  • Sound judgement and excellent communication skills.
  • Flexibility and being able to work varied shifts.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated familiarity with the sound and structure of Public Radio.
  • Experience working at an NPR Member station.
  • Experience working on video production and projects, in addition to audio.


Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Work Location & Requirements

  • NPR Remote-Permitted: This is a remote-permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, D.C. office, but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves. You will have the option of working (a) remotely from a location of your choosing within the United States that is supported by NPR; (b) on-site at an NPR facility, based on the availability of desks and approval from NPR; or (c) a combination of both. Regardless of where you choose to work from, you may be expected to travel to other locations from time to time to perform the duties of your position.


Job Type

  • This is a temporary, full time position. This position is expected to last a period of approximately 6 months.


Compensation

Hourly Rate: The U.S. based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $49.28 per hour. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
