The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success, and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry, and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the rural populations of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provide dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. To operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed. |
| Job Duties |
A General Dentist in the School of Dental Medicine (SoDM) is responsible for teaching all areas of clinical dentistry to pre- and post-doctoral students. This position will be in the Department of General Dentistry and reports directly to the Division Director of Pre-Doctoral Clinical Education. The position works in close cooperation with the Offices of Academic Success, Clinical Affairs, Extramural Clinical Practices and Dental Education and Informatics to support the School's programs and initiatives. In addition, the department works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and other components of the University of North Carolina, as well as local/regional educational and clinical programs.
Specific duties include:
- Instructing pre and post-doctoral students in comprehensive general dentistry procedures, including but not limited to treatment planning, operative, prosthodontic, surgical, endodontic, periodontics in the following environments: simulation laboratory, didactic classroom / seminar, and in Ross Hall, CSLC, and GPR clinics.
- Working with other faculty members and directors to promote and advance the use of digital dentistry for restorative and other disciplines of dentistry.
- Instructing pre-doctoral students in the clinical setting in procedures pertaining to the General Dentistry Model of the School of Dental Medicine.
- Helping ensure that the dental students are competent in the management of patients requiring all disciplines of dentistry.
- Serving on committees and boards within the school.
- Actively engaging in community service with students / residents.
- Conducting basic or clinical research, and/or other scholarly activities, that will qualify for appropriate advancement in rank.
- Commitment to the Mission and Vision of the School of Dental Medicine, including both a community-based and a generalist model of dental education.
- Conducting basic and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify for appropriate promotion.
- Commitment to evidence-based teaching and practice.
- Responding to assignments from the Director of Pre-Doctoral Clinical Education, Chair of General Dentistry, and any other duties as assigned by the Dean of the School of Dental Medicine that are essential to the school's operations.
The General Dentistry Faculty member must qualify for a fixed-term, tenured, or tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank/title of Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Professor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor.
Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the
UNC Optional Retirement Program (
ORP), which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b, 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (
TSERS). Additionally, this position offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability.
While this position is not automatically eligible for the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (
TSERS), new hires transferring from another North Carolina state agency and current
ECU employees transferring internally who had been enrolled in
TSERS in their previous employment will continue participation in
TSERS. These individuals may be able to elect to participate in
ORP if they had not been offered that option at the time of their initial enrollment into
TSERS.

| Minimum Education/Experience |
DDS or DMD from a CODA-accredited institution or the equivalent- Eligibility for a North Carolina Dental License
- Five years of General Practice experience

DDS or DMD or equivalent- Eligibility for a North Carolina Dental License (a NC dental license must be secured prior to the first day of employment)

- Completion of an AEGD or GPR program
- Instructor certification in CEREC or similar digital dental technology
- Experience teaching CEREC or similar digital dental technology
- Willingness to learn and develop the skills to prepare and teach pre-clinical General Dentistry.
- Willingness to apply academic experiences of contemporary dental education and traditional educational values to the Service Learning model.
