Job Announcement

This position is responsible for all facets of managing the operations of the concealed weapons unit. This includes operating the following computers and software: Virginia Criminal Information Network VCIN), National Criminal Information Network (NCIN), current police records management system, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, and Microsoft Business Suite, ATF E-Trace, department intra-net programs. Reviews and processes concealed handgun permit applications, conducts e-trace, and criminal records checks on people and firearms. Must have a working knowledge of the Police Report Writing Manual, General Orders (GOs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Conducts background investigations and prepare written police investigation reports. The position works during business hours in office work. May utilize virtual platforms for training, roll calls, and meetings.

  • Conducts thorough background investigations through interviews with applicants or related parties;
  • Verifies references, reports, evaluations and/or other documents in conjunction with the background investigation;
  • Assists in recruiting prospective applicants;
  • Assists in testing and processing applicants;
  • Prepares written recommendations and reviews comprehensive background summaries with supervisor.

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of law enforcement investigative principles and interview techniques;
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of Public Safety departmental procedures;

  • Ability to conduct detailed analytical evaluations and to prepare related reports and
  • recommendations;
  • Ability to maintain a high level of ethical standards;

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

An associate's degree with major course work in human resources, police science or related field; plus 3 years' experience in investigations or law enforcement.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Driver's License (Required)
  • VCIN - VA Criminal Information Network -Required upon appointment and recertify every 24 months (Required)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, credit check, driving record check, and polygraph exam to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with background investigations, recruitment, testing, and/or processing applicants.
  • Experience in a Virginia public safety Law Enforcement working environment.
  • Experience with Linx-The Law Enforcement Information Exchange and eTrace.
  • Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certificate and ability to run queries.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work requires the ability to operate keyboard driven equipment; to operate devices with tablet technologies; speak clearly and articulate facts; read, analyze and understand legal writings, documents; and to sit for long periods of time. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
