Job Summary

Under direction of the Gourley Staff Veterinarian and ISF supervisor, coordinate activities to facilitate and provide instructional support for clinical teaching activities within the School of Veterinary Medicine. Serve as an ISF Team Lead to provide coordination and oversight of ISF staff activities, roles, and responsibilities. Serve as the ISF Patient Care Coordinator for small animal surgical courses. Collaborate with staff to provide transport, patient care, lab coordination, support, and instruction. Fulfill operational needs for laboratory courses, followed by complete cleanup and disinfection. Provide oversight of departmental resources (facility, equipment, supplies, staff, animal-live and cadaver) in compliance with departmental/campus/state regulations, standards and procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license, or equivalent experience and education and ability to obtain RVT license within 1 year.
  • Valid CA Driver's License required.
  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • No minimum education required.
  • Extensive experience in and knowledge of the technical care, welfare of, infectious diseases of, and disinfection protocols for small animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, small mammals, birds, and reptiles) and large animals (cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs) in a veterinary hospital or shelter environment, or in a teaching laboratory.
  • Extensive experience in the following: restraint of a large variety of animal species of various sizes and behaviors in a hospital or shelter environment; technical procedures of veterinary care including but not limited to drug administration, surgery, anesthesia, and imaging; operating and trouble-shooting basic surgical, anesthetic, imaging, and laboratory equipment.
  • Experience working effectively and efficiently independent of supervision to set deadlines and priorities, direct others, attain goals, and evaluate workload and performance, with experience in project management and leading a diverse team of individuals to achieve operational directives.
  • Proficiency in use of personal computers, databases, spreadsheets, electronic calendars, inventory management systems, and word processing software
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written skills to provide and receive instruction, constructive feedback, to work in a diverse group/team-centric environment, and to develop and clearly fill out forms and inventories used in patient care and operational management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience maintaining animal facilities in excellent visual and operational condition.
  • Working knowledge of Federal, State, and University requirements and guidelines in the governing animal use and welfare, such as the housing and general care of animal species.

Department Overview

Headed by the Associate Dean for Professional Education, the Office of Professional Education provides instructional support for the School of Veterinary Medicine. The Gourley Clinical Teaching Center handles the teaching of anesthesia, ultrasound, dentistry, clinical skills, and surgery to the DVM students, using live animals, cadaver specimens, and teaching models. The GCTC houses dogs, cats, horses, cows, goats, sheep, pigs, rabbits, rodents, and reptiles, operates 365 days a year, and shifts vary starting as early as 6:00am and ending as late as 10:00 or 11:00pm. There are over 700 lab sessions conducted at the GCTC each academic year and the facility houses and cares for the canine and feline Teaching Colonies used in the DVM curriculum.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

This is a position with variable shifts, and work hours/days are assigned based on program needs. Normal work schedule is 10 hours per day M-Th while surgical courses are in session but are subject to change. Required to work variable hours on short notice, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, covering staff shortages and holiday shifts. Good attendance habits are crucial. Work in high traffic areas with constant noise from animals and people in a fast-paced, constantly changing, and heavy volume patient-care environment. May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught students and staff. Work in an environment where animals are used for teaching. Work with animal cadavers and in animal shelter environments. Work with preserved animal specimens. Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. Position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University policy.
