As a Sterile Processing Supervisor, you will provide operational leadership for one of the most critical departments within the health system. This role is ideal for a collaborative, detail-oriented leader who is passionate about quality, process improvement, staff development, and supporting exceptional surgical outcomes in a fast-paced academic medical environment. Direct and oversee the daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department for the University of Virginia Health System, including staffing coordination, workflow management, quality oversight, and regulatory compliance. Provide leadership and direction for the development and implementation of sterilization, high-level disinfection, and decontamination policies, procedures, and best practices. This role is responsible for ensuring instrumentation, supplies, and critical surgical resources are processed accurately and available in a timely manner to support surgical services and other clinical departments throughout the health system. Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership Direct day-to-day Sterile Processing operations, ensuring efficiency, productivity, and service excellence across all functional areas. Oversee workflows related to decontamination, assembly, preparation, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instrumentation and equipment. Assign and prioritize departmental workloads while proactively troubleshooting operational challenges and resolving issues in real time. Ensure adequate staffing coverage through schedule coordination, attendance monitoring, and time-off approval management. Regulatory & Quality Compliance Ensure departmental operations remain compliant with regulatory and accreditation standards, including those established by: The Joint Commission Virginia Department of Health AAMI OSHA Hospital and infection prevention guidelines Establish and enforce safety protocols, fire regulations, and infection control practices within the department. Lead departmental quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives focused on patient safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement. Team Leadership & Development Provide direct supervision, coaching, and mentorship to Sterile Processing staff. Hire, onboard, evaluate performance, and implement corrective action plans when necessary. Foster a positive, accountable, and collaborative team culture. Support employee growth through orientation, in-service education, continuous training, certification support, and professional development opportunities. Encourage career advancement and skill development among department staff. Customer Service & Collaboration Partner closely with Surgical Services, clinics, and procedural areas to ensure operational needs are met efficiently and effectively. Review and respond to customer feedback from operating rooms, clinics, and procedural departments to identify opportunities for workflow and service improvements. Communicate clearly, consistently, and professionally with staff, leadership, and clinical partners. Technology & Systems Management Serve as a champion and system administrator for the SPM Instrument Tracking System. Maintain system integrity and utilize reporting tools to identify trends, improve workflows, and support departmental optimization initiatives. Leverage data and analytics to drive operational improvements and support departmental goals. Why UVA Health? MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education High School Diploma or equivalent required Associate's Degree preferred Experience Minimum of 3 years of progressive leadership experience within Sterile Processing preferred, ideally within a hospital or healthcare environment Minimum of 3 years of Sterile Processing experience preferred Certification One of the following certifications is required: CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) through HSPA/IAHCSMM OR CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) through CBSPD PHYSICAL DEMANDS Job requires sitting/standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling and reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, vibrations, heat, noise, blood/body fluids and infectious disease. The starting base rate for this role is $26.23 hourly.
