Role Summary

Provide hands-on technical leadership for polyethylene blown film extrusion processes with a strong focus on safety, quality, productivity, waste reduction, and process consistency. This role supports the development and sustainment of standard operating conditions, process capability improvement, troubleshooting of film and equipment issues, and execution of capital and continuous improvement projects.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working on the plant floor and using data to solve problems. Experience with polyethylene film structures, resin and additive blend development, film trials, statistical analysis, maintenance troubleshooting, and process validation is highly valued. This role partners closely with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, Materials, and Engineering to deliver measurable manufacturing results.

Role Purpose

Drive process excellence in blown film extrusion by establishing, validating, and sustaining robust manufacturing conditions that reduce variation and improve long-term product quality. Provide engineering and technical expertise to support safe operation, improve throughput, reduce scrap, optimize film performance, and standardize materials, machinery, and methods across the Autobag Division. Support divisional initiatives through the application of Lean, Six Sigma, and other structured problem-solving methodologies.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Develop, implement, and sustain Standard Operating Conditions (SOC) for blown film extrusion processes in collaboration with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and Materials teams. This includes startup conditions, resin and additive handling, process settings, changeovers, and troubleshooting standards for both existing and new equipment.
  • Provide day-to-day technical support for polyethylene blown film extrusion lines by identifying sources of variation and driving improvements in safety, gauge control, layflat, bubble stability, output, scrap, and finished film quality.
  • Lead and support film trials, new product qualifications, resin and masterbatch evaluations, blend optimization, and process validation activities. Document trial objectives, execution details, results, conclusions, and recommendations in clear technical summary reports.
  • Analyze process and quality data using statistical tools to determine process capability, identify trends, investigate defects, and validate improvements. Support the use of Six Sigma, Lean, and root cause problem-solving methods in manufacturing.
  • Troubleshoot process, equipment, and product quality issues in partnership with Production and Maintenance. Support corrective actions related to extrusion, feeding, blending, air rings, IBC systems, cooling, winding, gauge variation, blocking, gels, haze, and other film-related defects.
  • Initiate and manage projects that improve safety, quality, cost, capacity, reliability, and overall manufacturing effectiveness. This includes capital projects ranging from line upgrades and controls improvements to supporting installation, commissioning, and startup of new equipment.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to determine project priorities, communicate status, and ensure timely execution of assigned work. Provide clear written and verbal updates to management and stakeholders.
  • Maintain current knowledge of emerging extrusion, polymer, automation, and process control technologies and recommend practical applications that strengthen the performance of the Autobag manufacturing

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Polymer Science, Plastics Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment is required. Experience in blown film extrusion, flexible packaging, plastics processing, or a related converting/manufacturing process is preferred.
  • Experience with polyethylene film extrusion, resin and additive blend development, and running or supporting structured film trials is a strong plus.
  • Working knowledge of polymers, extrusion fundamentals, and film performance characteristics is preferred.
  • Hands-on mechanical, process, or maintenance troubleshooting experience related to manufacturing equipment and process capability improvement is required.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical capability, including experience with statistical analysis, process validation, and data-driven decision making is required.
  • Practical experience with Six Sigma, Lean, quality systems tools, or structured root cause analysis is preferred. Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification is a plus.
  • Demonstrated project management capability, including managing timelines, resources, and cross-functional deliverables for capital or continuous improvement projects is required.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across Operations, Quality, Maintenance, Materials, and Engineering teams is required.
  • Ability to work independently, lead small teams or projects, and drive results with limited direction in a fast-paced manufacturing environment is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and translate findings into practical shop-floor actions is required.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Creo, or similar engineering/design software is a plus.
  • Schedule flexibility to support manufacturing needs and ability to travel to other facilities as required.
  • Positive, collaborative, hands-on approach with a strong commitment to safety, accountability, and continuous improvement is required.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley Controls is a strong plus.
