THE POSITION

The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Huntingdon is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Corrections Automotive Mechanic Trade Instructor to share their skills with inmates to help them learn a trade while they are incarcerated. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will provide structed on-the-job training and shop instruction in the automotive mechanic trade for inmates. Your work will involve closely supervising inmates during classroom training and work assignments. During your time instructing, you will be responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates throughout their training and work assignments. Work will be received in the form of work orders which may be accompanied by diagrams, charts, sketches, and schematics. You will independently determine procedures, tools, equipment, and materials to be used by inmates in carrying out assignments. Additionally, you will issue and inventory all materials and tools used, as well as conduct searches to account for all materials and tools.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $51,868.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Four years of experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and replacement of various components and systems used in automobiles, trucks, or construction or heavy equipment; or
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the automotive mechanic trade; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the automotive mechanic trade.

Special Requirements:
  • This position requires possession of an active Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Technician Certificate issued by an approved provider.
  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
  • This position must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class A CDL or equivalent with air brake restriction removed.

Other Requirements:
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • This position will require employees to pass the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation New Mechanic training course during probationary period.
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
