POSITION SUMMARY:

The Heavy Equipment Operator is directly responsible for safely and efficiently operating and maintaining the large earth moving equipment used in the extraction of limestone for a crushing and screening processing plant. This position performs the operations of Bulldozer, Loader Operator, Haul Truck, Grader Water Truck, and other equipment as assigned. The incumbent should operate all equipment in a safe and most efficient manner while making every attempt to keep up with whatever rate is needed to keep raw material feed for continuous operation of the plant, mining operations, stockpiling, or material hauling. Individuals in this role are responsible for keeping a clean and safe workplace and letting management know promptly of any hazards that the incumbent may encounter at the operation.

RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS:

Bulldozer

  • Ensure bulldozer is operating safely and efficiently.
  • Monitor equipment conditions and note necessary maintenance requirements.
  • Ensure that the bulldozer is properly inspected prior to shift operation and all conditions noted.
  • Maintain thorough communications with Quarry Manager to inform of equipment status or conditional changes.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping in the equipment and in the working area of the quarry.

Loader Operator

  • Inspect work area before entering.
  • Perform required workplace and equipment pre-shift inspections and document.
  • Perform required loader work that is necessary to continue operations including cleaning out headings and/or loading haul trucks.
  • Perform preventive and light maintenance on equipment as needed.

Haul Truck

  • Inspect work area before entering.
  • Perform required workplace and equipment pre-shift inspections and document.
  • Service and lubricate equipment as required including maintenance of fluid levels.
  • Maintain thorough communications with Quarry Manager to inform of equipment status or conditional changes.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping in the haul truck and in working area of the quarry.
  • Assist the maintenance team members as directed.

Additional Heavy Equipment

  • Safely and efficiently operate additional mobile equipment such as the Water Truck, Grader, and any additional equipment on which trained.

Safety

  • Attend scheduled safety meetings.
  • Participate in Behavior Based Safety program.
  • Comply with company, state, and governmental health and safety regulations.
  • Comply with company General Conduct and Safety Rules.
  • Tell the Maintenance Manager or Quarry Manager of safety hazards, repairs, or help that is needed to operate the plant in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform and documents pre-shift inspections and document them.
  • Report any unsafe condition found during pre-shift inspections.
  • Operate the plant within its means to help minimize issues that could occur from break downs and plug up.

Safe Quality Food (SQF)

  • Ensure a SQF workplace and follow regulatory compliance with Federal FDA - Food Modernization Safety Act (CFR Code of Federal Regulations Title 21, Part 507).
  • Support Environmental Health and Safety, as well as SQF initiatives and awareness programs.
  • Be a leader and promoter of employee safety and SQF culture.
  • Following completion of SQF training, demonstrate understanding of expected safety, SQF performance and Food Safety Culture.
  • Complete periodic SQF training(s).
  • Each site location will ensure training is conducted for new employees and continued for existing employees.
  • Employees will actively participate in audits for regulatory, safety, SQF and environmental compliance at the site.

Perform other duties as assigned.

ATTRIBUTES:

  • Must be capable of working any shift, overtime, be on-call, or work seven days a week, if needed.
  • Must be able to multitask with a strong sense of urgency to meet the customer needs.
  • Must be able to work well within a team environment and take instructions from management and co-workers.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently.
  • Must possess the basic reading and math skills.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong record of attendance reliability.
  • Must know, understand, and observe all department and plant safety rules and maintain a high level of housekeeping in assigned work areas.
  • Must be capable of performing the essential job duties required of this job.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Must be physically able to perform work assigned.
  • Access all areas within a site which could include heights of 120 feet, confined spaces, climbing ladders or stairs, and accessing tunnels.
  • Will be working at times in covered environment but mainly in mining environment.
  • The employee will be exposed to the following working conditions: Extreme Heat and Cold, Noise, Vibration, Oils, and Atmospheric Conditions such as Dust, Fumes, and Mineral Particles.
  • The employee will be required to perform the following actions (from time to time): Standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, seeing, hearing, and sitting.
  • Ability to consistently lift over 40 pounds as needed.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma, GED Equivalent, or demonstrated skills or ability.

PREFFERED EDUCATION:

  • Technical training or AA degree in technical related field is desired.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous heavy manufacturing and/or mining experience is highly preferred.

PREFFERED EXPERIENCE:

  • 3 - 5 years of experience
