DESCRIPTION

This laboratory studies mechanisms of asthma and allergy with a view to novel therapeutic development. Experiments are performed independently and as part of a team.

Under supervision, the responsibilities include performing laboratory bench experiments related to studies in mouse models of asthma and sinus disease using different strains of knockout mice and assess innate lymphoid cell responses. The incumbent will sensitize and allergen challenge mice, process lungs, sinuses and tissues for immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry (13-color) and image analysis, capture and quantitate lung images on image analysis computer program, measure proteins in lung by ELISA and RT-PCR.

Under supervision, will perform minor surgery to measure pulmonary function on anesthetized mice. Use aseptic technique for tissue culture. Will be responsible for mouse breeding colony management (genotyping), ordering mice, chemicals and reagents. Additionally, experiments with human sinus and blood samples will be performed and skills required include cell isolation from tissue, cell culture and flow cytometric analysis of innate lymphocyte populations. Other duties assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge of a life science as is typically required by a Bachelor's Degree in a field related of research such as animal physiology, biology, molecular biology, immunology, and biochemistry.

  • Demonstrated laboratory experience in addition to coursework to include ELISA, flow cytometry, RNA-sequencing, RT-PCR, and mouse work.

  • Experience with flow cytometry for innate lymphoid cells for both mouse and human cells.

  • Direct laboratory experience working with rodent (mouse or rat) models.

  • Demonstrated experience performing standard laboratory techniques (pipetting, weighing).

  • Demonstrated experience in record keeping, paying close attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.

  • Excellent computer skills and ability to learn new computer programs. Demonstrated knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook. Demonstrated data entry experience.

  • Willingness to learn new techniques and tasks and share knowledge of such.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as to effectively document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.

  • Good organizational skills to order and maintain lab equipment and supplies.

  • Effective interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a variety of personnel from different laboratories.

  • Familiarity with the writing of Animal Subjects protocols.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing to work with mice and allergens.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $65,208 - $104,901 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.23 - $50.24

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
