Under general supervision and guided by Medical Center and Ambulatory Services policies and procedures, and in collaboration with providers and administrative leadership, the Ambulatory Oncology Nurse Care Coordinator functions with a high degree of autonomy to assess, plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate patient care for pediatric, adolescent, and young adult oncology patients in the ambulatory setting. Utilizes advanced clinical knowledge to meet patient needs, support efficient care delivery, and provide patient and family education. Serves as a patient advocate and liaison among patients, families, insurance providers, inpatient and outpatient services, and other healthcare resources to ensure timely and coordinated care. Participates in the development and implementation of patient care standards and practices.

Responsibilities include performing oncology-related clinic procedures such as central line care and dressing changes, laboratory draws, port access, medication administration, and assisting with procedures including lumbar punctures. Coordinates outpatient services, including insurance authorizations, home health services, durable medical equipment (DME), medication refills, and research-related activities. Provides patient education and supports comprehensive care coordination to ensure timely and effective patient care.

Utilizes the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to provide safe and therapeutic patient care. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams, carrying out established nursing procedures and related duties as required. Provides care for patients with complex needs under appropriate guidance and assists in the management of care delivered by other members of the healthcare team.

Required Qualifications

  • Flexibility to orient and work across all UCSF Medical Center locations
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical RN experience, including:
    • Pediatric Hematology/Oncology outpatient experience
    • Pediatric Hematology/Oncology case management experience
  • Experience with the use and care of port-a-caths, central lines, and blood draw procedures
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of the position
  • Recent experience with electronic medical record (EMR) documentation
  • Minimum of one (1) year of pediatric clinical experience related to disease-specific care when associated with a Specialty Care Center (SCC)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Licensure and Certifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) CPR certification
  • Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse (CPHON) certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and proficiency working with computers
  • Knowledge of UCSF systems and Epic EMR
  • Strong patient triage skills
  • Ability to multitask effectively
  • Self-directed and highly organized
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Experience managing large caseloads

Salary Information


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.


Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
