JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Penn State College of Medicine Core Coagulation Reference Laboratory in Hershey, PA is seeking applicants for a part-time Research Technologist.

The Research Technologist supports the Core Coagulation Reference Laboratory by performing advanced genomebased clinical and translational assays for patients evaluated in the Hemophilia Treatment Center. This role integrates molecular diagnostics, coagulation science, and research methodologies to support patient care, clinical studies, and assay development. The technologist works collaboratively with clinicians, laboratory directors, and research staff to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant testing.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Testing and Technical Duties

  • Perform genomebased clinical and research assays related to inherited and acquired bleeding and thrombotic disorders (e.g., targeted sequencing, genotyping, variant analysis).
  • Conduct molecular techniques including DNA/RNA extraction, PCRbased assays, library preparation, and nextgeneration sequencing workflows.
  • Perform specialized coagulation and hematology assays as required to support genotypephenotype correlation studies.
  • Ensure proper specimen handling, processing, storage, and documentation in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Review, analyze, and interpret experimental and clinical data; identify technical issues and troubleshoot assay performance.

Quality, Compliance, and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, electronic data files, and test documentation in compliance with CLIA, CAP, and institutional policies.
  • Participate in quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing activities.
  • Assist with validation, verification, and optimization of new genomebased assays and methodologies.
  • Adhere strictly to biosafety, infection control, and regulatory requirements.

Research and Clinical Collaboration

  • Support translational research projects linking coagulation phenotypes with genomic findings.
  • Collaborate with hematologists, geneticists, and research scientists in assay development and clinical investigations.
  • Assist with preparation of research data for presentations, publications, and regulatory or grant submissions.
  • Contribute to protocol development for clinical studies and specialized testing initiatives.

Operational Support

  • Maintain laboratory equipment, reagents, and inventories; coordinate with vendors and service providers as needed.
  • Train and mentor junior laboratory staff, students, or trainees on standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings, continuing education, and professional development activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or a related scientific field.
  • Demonstrated experience performing molecular/genomic laboratory techniques.
  • Knowledge of coagulation biology, hematologic disorders, or clinical laboratory workflows.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow complex protocols accurately.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related scientific discipline.
  • Experience in a CLIAregulated, CAPaccredited, or clinical reference laboratory.
  • Familiarity with nextgeneration sequencing platforms and bioinformatics tools.
  • Experience supporting clinical research or translational medicine programs.
  • ASCP or equivalent laboratory certification (or eligibility).

Work Environment

  • Laboratorybased position involving handling of human specimens.
  • Requires adherence to biosafety and personal protective equipment protocols.
  • May involve occasional schedule flexibility to support clinical testing and research deadlines.

Compensation: The starting rate for this job is $33.65/hour.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
