The Position

The Vice President, Patient Safety and Quality serves as the Chief Patient Safety and Quality Officer providing executive leadership for patient safety, quality and service at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. This position works to eliminate preventable harm to patients, family members, and staff, to attain unsurpassed clinical and patient-reported outcomes, and build organization-wide participation through transparency, collaboration, and mutual learning. Working in partnership with senior administrative and medical staff leadership, the VP will set the organizational strategy for quality and safety and lead a comprehensive quality/performance improvement program ensuring the best possible outcomes, achieve national leader performance and strengthen the Johns Hopkins brand.



The VP will also be put forth as a candidate to hold the position of Catherine Kobren Endowed Professor in Patient Safety and Quality. Endowed chairs and endowed professorships are among the most prestigious positions in the health system and are reserved for the most distinguished scholars and leaders. This position joins the ranks of more than 400 professorship holders with faculty appointments within the Johns Hopkins Health System.



The following comprise the major expectations and responsibilities of the Johns Hopkins All Children's VP Patient Safety and Quality position:



  1. In consultation with the local and health system leadership teams, the VP PSQ will set the organizational direction for quality and safety and ensure accountability for achieving health system and entity goals.
  2. Collaborate across the health system and with national leaders in children's health care to advance the highest standards for patient safety and quality.
  3. Provide leadership for high-reliability principles, a safe and just culture and data-driven continuous improvement.
  4. Quickly establish credibility and become a fully engaged, respected partner within the Leadership Team and actively participate with the decision-making process, helping to drive clinical excellence.
  5. Become an open and transparent resource to Johns Hopkins All Children's leaders.


Reporting Relationship:

Reports directly to the president of Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital and the JHHS VP of Quality and Safety. Works collaboratively with leaders across the organization and JHM.

Major Expectations & Key Responsibilities

The following comprise the major expectations and key responsibilities of the person who accepts Johns Hopkins All Children's VP Patient Safety and Quality position:



  1. In consultation with the local and health system leadership teams, set the organizational strategy for patient safety and quality and develop comprehensive strategic and tactical plans to achieve annual and long-term quality and safety goals. Recommend quality and safety priorities based upon knowledge of JHACH, JHM, local, state, and national priorities, regulations and accreditation requirements.
  2. Lead organizational efforts focused on eliminating preventable harm and ensuring the best possible patient outcomes and experience and the highest value of care.
  3. Oversee proactive evaluation and redesign of systems to improve and achieve highly reliable care processes.
  4. Partner with clinical and operational leaders to identify and manage risks, events and opportunities for improvement in an environment that promotes learning and safe systems. Ensure a proactive and transparent approach.
  5. Oversee highly reliable event management processes, including a strong reporting culture, a strong event reporting system, an effective cause analysis program and a timely communication and resolution process with patients who experience harm.
  6. Provide leadership for a safe, just and person-centered culture, including structure and process for evaluation and ongoing improvement.
  7. Participate with governing body, management, professional staff, and clinical leaders in decision-making structures and processes, which includes attendance at meetings of trustees (including Board Quality and Patient Safety Committee), professional staff (including Medical Executive Committee). Leads or serves on other committees as assigned.
  8. Departmental responsibilities include patient safety, quality, infection prevention and clinical pathways. Ensure effective and efficient operations for all functions in support of excellent clinical outcomes.
  9. Ensure strong partnership with Institute and Department leaders including a matrix reporting relationship with Institute and Department quality and safety leaders.
  10. Responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance and initiating changes where required to achieve or sustain compliance.
  11. Perform duties in a manner that is consistent with the JHACH service excellence standards and Culture Statement.
  12. Represent JHACH at national, state, and local meetings and conferences. Serve as a patient safety, quality and service liaison with state/federal agencies and key constituencies throughout the organization and across JHM.
  13. Contribute to and plan an active role in JHHS efforts to align strategic priorities, interventions and standard work to harmonize system-wide approaches where appropriate.


Professional Qualifications and Experience



  • Bachelor's Degree required, advanced degree in healthcare, law, policy or related field preferred.
  • An advanced degree in business administration, health care administration, nursing, medicine or a comparable area of study.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive managerial experience in health care and 7 - 10 years of progressive patient safety and quality experience are required.
  • Experience in a children's hospital and/or academic health care setting is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide executive leadership for departments and programs.
  • Comprehensive understanding of quality, patient safety, patient experience, clinical risk management, regulatory affairs and performance improvement with the ability to execute.
  • Experience in achieving results and a documented track record of implementing/accomplishing quality and safety improvements in a complex environment.
  • Effective written and oral communication and presentation skills and the ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated mentoring, coaching and team-building skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills with the ability to motivate others. The ability to bring consensus and accountability through teamwork.
  • Must be highly relational, able to work with ambiguity and bring clarity and focus to tasks, while navigating between health system and local needs and expectations.
  • Collaborative team-oriented player, who values people and who can build consensus and motivate others toward mutual objectives


Salary Range: Minimum /hour - Maximum /hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
