DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This role keeps tunnels, facilities, and surrounding grounds in safe, clean, and working condition while supporting incident response and traffic operations. You will monitor conditions, operate specialized equipment, and communicate clearly with team members and first responders to maintain situational awareness. As a Tunnel Maintainer, you will perform the following duties:
- Routine Maintenance: Perform planned and emergency upkeep of tunnels and portal buildings, including cleaning drainage systems and facilities, painting, repairing structural components, and clearing debris from upper air-chamber floors and roof areas
- Incident Response: Respond to traffic incidents to restore normal flow by assisting motorists and first responders, towing or pushing disabled vehicles, directing traffic, removing debris, and making minor vehicle repairs
- Tunnel Monitoring: Monitor traffic flow, carbon monoxide levels, fire conditions, and over-height vehicles, and address any incidents outside normal conditions
- HOV Lane Operations: Open and close the HOV lane, manually operate gates to assist with snow removal, and maintain CPR and First Aid certification required for these duties
- Towing and Washing: Use towing apparatus to move disabled vehicles safely and operate wash trucks and pressure washers; climb ladders to catwalks, fill tankers, and conduct tunnel washings, with tanker endorsement required
- Work Zones and Gates: Deploy cones, signs, crash trucks, and flashing arrows to close lanes, and operate the I-376 flood gates when conditions warrant opening or closing

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment, rotating 24/7 operations.
- Work hours are varied and are based upon operational considerations. Shifts can range from the following: 9:30 PM - 5:30 AM; 5:30 AM - 1:30 PM; 1:30 PM - 9:30 PM, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Travel, overtime, and shift work required.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $52,097.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
- All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
- All employees must demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
- All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, or equivalent on their first day of employment.
- All employees must obtain within the probationary period an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.
- All positions in this job require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment during the probationary period.
