THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will engage in various welding and metalworking activities involving both ferrous and non-ferrous materials. You will use arc, acetylene, and MIG welding tools to cut, weld, and repair components for different types of Department machinery, such as trucks, cars, plows, spreaders, and trailers. Your tasks will also include fabricating new or replacement parts, performing minor mechanical work like installing and removing plow frames or chemical tanks, and operating equipment like forklifts and bucket trucks to assist with welding and fabrication. It is essential to use power tools safely, adhere to work orders, and apply the correct techniques when handling specialized materials like stainless steel, aluminum, cast iron, and steel.

Beyond the technical aspects, you will need to keep your work area safe and organized, stay updated on new welding techniques and equipment, and communicate with supervisors and purchasing staff about material needs. Following environmental protection guidelines is crucial, as is supporting the department's environmental goals through responsible practices. Additionally, you may need to pass a welding test to become certified for structural or bridge-related welding. Through these responsibilities, you will help maintain vital equipment and enhance the organization's overall safety, efficiency, and environmental stewardship.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel and overtime may be required, and work hours may change based on seasonal needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of experience in the operation and use of welding equipment, materials, and related shop equipment to repair, maintain, or fabricate parts, equipment, or structures; or
  • Completion of a three-year, high school Vo-Tech training program in welding and eighteen months of experience in the operation and use of welding equipment, materials, and related shop equipment to repair, maintain, or fabricate parts, equipment, or structures; or
  • Completion of an approved welder apprentice program; or
  • A welding certificate D1.1 from the American Welding Society; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
