Basic Function

Join HF Sinclair Midstream at a pivotal point in our journey to modernize our operations and enhance long-term reliability across the enterprise. As part of the Process Controls Engineering team within Operation's Technical Services, you will work alongside an experienced leadership team known for developing engineers, leaders, and high-performing technical organizations.


You will apply your automation & controls engineering expertise to optimize, standardize, and modernize pipeline control systems, truck loading terminals, tank batteries, and related infrastructure. Working with operations, maintenance, engineering, IT, and project teams to advance operational excellence, system lifecycle management, and long-term reliability across our midstream operations.


This role is designed with a strong emphasis on work-life balance of primarily planned work hours, minimal after-hours support, and no routine on-call expectations. The work location will be one of the following offices: Dallas, TX; Tulsa, OK; Salt Lake City, UT; Artesia, NM; Casper, WY; Cheyenne, WY.

Job Duties

  • Design, develop, and optimize end-to-end system integration solutions between field devices, PLCs, Terminal Management System (TMS), SCADA, OT applications, communication networks, and business systems.
  • Standardize and improve PLC applications through flexible templates, reusable code libraries, and engineering best practices
  • Lead control-focused projects and contribute to major cross-team projects

    • Collaborate with stakeholders to define scope and requirements
    • Develop cost estimates and technical justification that support project evaluation and approval
    • Update technical documentation
    • Oversee control and automation contractors, when utilized
    • Ensure controls scope is delivered safely, on-time, and within budget


  • Apply, maintain, and improve control processes, templates, and reusable libraries
  • Manage change and version control systems
  • Support risk management, commissioning, lifecycle management, cross-functional coordination, and hazardous area considerations
  • Support risk management,
  • Evaluate and identify new technologies, processes, and ideas that enhance efficiency, reliability, and lifecycle ownership of our assets
  • Develop technical documentation including logic diagrams, cause-and-effect matrices, control narratives, and wiring and termination drawings



Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion

Experience

  • 5+ years of Automation, Controls, or Industrial Systems Engineering experience
  • 5+ years of PLC and HMI development, programming, and deployment experience
  • 2+ years of Midstream Oil & Gas experience



Preferred Experience:



  • Working in a project-driven environment delivering Industrial Control System (ICS) solutions
  • Supporting Terminal Management Systems (TMS) used for truck loading

Education Level

Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Controls Engineering, or related Engineering discipline.

Required Skills

  • Development and deployment of integrated control solutions
  • Strong working knowledge of:

    • PLC logic
    • Field HMI applications
    • PLC to SCADA interfaces
    • Technical documentation, schematics, and drawings


  • Investigation and root cause analysis of complex 24x7x365 control system issues across PLCs, SCADA systems, and instrumentation
  • Planning and execution of testing, commissioning, and startup activities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including effective cross-functional collaboration and clear technical documentation
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint



Preferred Skills:



  • System lifecycle support and management
  • Development of software and/or scripting solutions supporting system integration
  • Development of operational dashboards and KPIs
  • PID loop tuning and support of advanced control strategies
  • Hands-on instrumentation and field systems experience
  • Working knowledge of ISA, NEC, NFPA, API standards, and similar codes
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility
May be responsible for the supervision of personnel as well as contractors.
Work Conditions
Office based with up to 25% travel required. Subject to varying weather conditions and required to work in all temperatures, including outdoors.

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing up to 200 ft., perceiving color differences, required to wear personal protective equipment as needed and a respirator in emergency situations (beards are not permitted), ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential, valid State driver's license and proof of insurance required. Job conditions may require making precise hand and finger movements, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping, and working in confined spaces as permitted.
