Under limited supervision of the Section Manager, the Senior Substation Field Engineer performs assignments of basic and moderate complexity in engineering field designs, problem analysis, and planning within Substation Operations. The Sr. Engineer conducts field investigations and prepares associated reports, and test memorandas within the field or fields of responsibility. This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.
Core Responsibilities
- Responsible for providing technical guidance and support during operation and maintenance of major substation electrical equipment (circuit breakers, power transformers, switchgear, capacitor banks, gas-insulated substations (GIS), instrument transformers, dc systems, test sets, etc.).
- Responsible for providing field support to substation operations when system and equipment problems occur and performs root cause analysis and investigation of equipment failures.
- Acts as a liaison and coordinates with T&S Engineering (Equipment Engineer and/or Relay Engineer) to troubleshoot field issues and to determine best corrective action as conditions warrant and on an as needed basis.
- Attend departmental meetings and serves on committees as required.
- Assist in preparation of operating, maintenance, and test procedures.
- Conduct and participate in field evaluation/analysis of field equipment or system maloperations, prepare failure analysis reports and other analyses as may be required.
- Participates in the Companys Emergency Response Plan through a designated storm assignment.
- Prepare test procedures for equipment commissioning or post repair restoration.
- Participates as Stand-by Supervisor on a 24x7 rotating basis, making decisions with respect to operating problems and contingencies during off-hours and weekends. Approximately 5-7 times a year.
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum 8 years of engineering work experience in substation engineering work or related operations experience. Development and application of technical principles in substation equipment rating, application, specification, engineering, operation, and maintenance. or
Relevant Work Experience
- Computer proficiency to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), required.
- Experience and/or knowledge of substation layout and major equipment including breakers, switches, and substation steel, required.
- Ability to interpret test results, one-line diagrams, and schematic drawings, required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong analytical, technical and computer skills, required.
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and industry standards associated with the equipment, required.
- Ability to write substation and relay maintenance procedures and coordinate engineering projects and assignments, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- Driver's License Required
- Professional Engineer (PE) Preferrederable to have a NY and NJ Professional Engineers License or be in the process of qualifying for a license. Preferred
Physical Demands
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
- Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
- Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be willing to attend meetings and conferences inside and outside of the Company service territory as needed.
- Must sit or stand to use a keyboard, mouse, and computer for long periods of time (4 plus hours)
