Position Summary: The Design Engineer I is responsible for developing and implementing simple to moderately complex new product designs and improving legacy products as assigned. Responsibilities also include completing analyses to support design decision. The entry-level Design Engineer I will be attentive to detail in completing assigned tasks under close guidance of more senior Design Engineers and/or the Engineering Manager. The Design Engineer I will work both independently and in a team environment with Designers, other Design Engineers, NPI Managers, and Test Technicians. Occasional collaboration with other departments including Manufacturing, Quality, and Assembly is also required.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
* Develop innovative mechanical part designs which meet product requirements.
* Generate functionally dimensioned, ASME Y14.5 compliant drawings including GD&T in SolidWorks. Adjust designs based upon tolerance stack analyses to ensure functionality. Assist in QAP identification.
* With minor assistance, complete basic level analyses using one or more of the following tools: FEA, motion, CFD, heat transfer, or other software.
* Process change orders through the PLM system for the release and revision of parts and assemblies.
* With assistance, generate logical and thorough test plans to evaluate new or modified product features or parts. Work with Test Technicians to complete testing as needed. Compile and analyze test data. Contribute to the generation of test reports and recommendations.
* Generate drawings with dimensioning, tolerancing, and datum structures which are optimized for both part functionality and ease of inspection. Participate in design for manufacturability reviews with teammates, Manufacturing Engineers, and vendors.
* Develop and manage Intellectual Property through patent searches, patent applications, and trade studies.
* Engage in and actively volunteer for general continuous improvement projects and tasks.
* Participate in and sustain 5S Standards.
* Must follow all required Safety and ISO procedures. Follow safe firearms handling practices, and all range safety procedures when in the range area.
* Must be able to travel infrequently.
* Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Education/Experience & Skills:
* Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and 0-3 years of previous experience in an R&D environment.
* Familiar with fundamental mechanical engineering skills including static, FEA, kinematic and dynamic motion, CFD, and/or heat transfer analyses.
* Proficient using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Proficient using CAD software to create parametric solid models, assemblies, and associated drawings; SolidWorks experience highly preferred.
* Able to generate clear, fully dimensioned, ASME Y14.5 compliant drawings of complex parts. Familiar with GD&T symbology. Able to create functional designs supported with multi-part tolerance stack analyses.
* Basic understanding of manufacturing methods including machining, metal injection molding, plastic injection molding, stamping/fine blanking, extrusion, forging, and casting is preferred. Knowledge in material selection, heat treatment and coatings also preferred.
* Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.
* Experience in using and maintaining firearms and/or related products preferred.
* Able to work effectively as part of a team, as well as independently, with moderate guidance.
* Familiar with basic mechanical assembly techniques. Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Working Conditions:
* Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer using a keyboard and mouse performing repetitive tasks.
* Ability to open file cabinets, reach with hands and arms, bend, and twist, lift and move files.
* Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
